BlacKkKlansman Movie Review

Getting straight to the point, no credits or anything to distract from the message the filmmaker is presenting, ‘BlacKkKlansman’ starts with an old fake news clip. An actor, played by Alec Baldwin, tells his audience about how white American children have been forced to go to school with an inferior race, the black race, who are listening to Martin Luther ‘Coon,’ and have become super predators. I’m actually being nice in telling you what the despicable character and his distorted vision of reality says as he looks straight into the camera and into the racist soul of certain people in that period of time. However much the film may depict a particular year in the past (BlacKkKlansman is based in the 70’s), it’s really showing you our present, especially at the end of the film… it’s shattering to see, on the big screen, who we are today.      

Director Spike Lee gives us the racial issues going on in the Black Power movement by introducing us to strong activists trying to get the message of their struggle through to people while showing that they are no different than Black Lives Matter, a group born from the police brutality and racial discrimination of today. Juxtaposed to that is their KKK and white supremacists and today’s very vocal and bigoted alt-right. He does so this is a powerful way that’s emotionally disturbing and will have you thinking way beyond the theatre doors.

Juxtaposed to that is their KKK and white supremacists and today’s very vocal and bigoted alt-right. He does so this is a powerful way that’s emotionally disturbing and will have you thinking way beyond the theatre doors.

The film is set in Colorado Springs and is actually based a retired African-American police officer Ron Stallworth’s (played expertly by John David Washington), book which is hard to believe is true, though it all is. Stallworth, tired of being treated like a second-class citizen and participating in infiltrating the rallies of the Black Power Movement, he decides to turn the tables. With help from fellow officers, he dupes the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, and eventually David Duke (Grace) himself, to become a card-carrying member of, the KKK. His skin tone would never allow him to get close to members of the Klan so Stallworth sets everything up via the phone and his partner, Flip (Driver), who has to deny to the members that he’s Jewish, meets with them. Though the film has plenty of comedic moments, here is where it gets really intense and shows what a master of the narrative Spike Lee is. This is the best piece of work he has put out since his earlier films and you won’t want to miss this on the big screen.

Throughout the film, images and verbal messages are used to get an incredibly important directive out to the audience. People are people, you are powerful and, chief among them, believe what you see. The alt-right and the KKK and white supremacists exist, they’re not something made up in a film or by a news channel, who is just trying to tell the American people the truth. Racism is a horrible thing yet more common than anyone wants to admit and ‘BlacKkKlansman’ has been made because the people that racism targets are tired of it. There is no superior race as characters in the film, in scene after scene, suggests and SAYS there is but there are a great many people out there who honestly believes there is. This film is fascinating and incredibly entertaining but also, it’s a reminder that what we have done in our past, can be… is being mirrored in our streets today. I can’t possibly express to you all the reasons why but as an American with an open mind, it’s crucial you don’t miss this eye-opening, impressive film.

Wont You Be My Neighbor? Movie Review

Fred Rogers or ‘Mister Rogers’ as he was always called later in life, was once a child. As a child, he was known to those who bullied him as ‘Fat Freddy.’ This bullying made him become the man he was, a philanthropic humanitarian and caretaker of young minds. He grew up to understand, feel for and love children to the degree that he changed his life’s path of becoming a minister and having his own church. He grabbed ahold of a wildly new medium at the time, television, and created an avenue in which to speak to children, one on one, and let them all know that they were special and that no matter what they were hearing from people around them, that they were loved and worthy of love. He saw television as a way to educate children and what was mostly seen as a tool used to entertain, he could use to add value to their lives, help them understand how to communicate, how to handle adversity and how to… love their neighbor.

This documentary goes deeply into why certain characters on the show were created. It fills in the blanks of who Fred Rogers was, speaking not only to cast and crew but to his family members, friends and his children, who must have felt that they had millions of siblings across the globe.

Puppets were originally given life as a way to fill in time. One puppet, in particular, Daniel the Tiger, was believed to be who Fred used therapeutically to speak words he himself could never utter. Though it was a kids show, Fred spoke of serious issues, even those paralleling the real world, knowing full well that subliminally children would pick up on and understand the theme he was conveying to them.

Through this documentary, I was immediately taken by this person I never gave much thought to and was thoroughly impressed by the lengths he went through to do the right thing. President Nixon wanted to cut funding to PBS, the Public Broadcasting Station Fred’s show was spread across America through. Upon hearing this and without hesitation, Fred went to Washington and in front of Congress he told them of the great importance to our youth public television was and managed to do did what no one else could have done. He changed their mind on the spot.

He considered the space between the TV and the receiver, where he spoke to the nation’s youth, very sacred ground, filling it on occasion with special episodes when children needed him most, such as the assassination of  Robert F. Kennedy and what happened to American during 9/11. For a short time, he tried a show focusing on helping adults but it didn’t take; best he works his magic with the kids who receive him better.

Director, Morgan Neville, shows some of the parodies that had been created and though he had a sense of humor about them, it was said that what bothered Fred most was when they made fun of the ideology behind the message. There was heartfelt, touching moments with the cast. They spoke highly of him and always felt his love and they, too, were open to receiving that special gift. The end of this film leaves you to wonder what he would have thought of how we live today. Would he be having a special episode for us right now? Believing that true evil came from people who try to break your spirit, he didn’t fear any ridicule and was never afraid to tackle any issue where a tremendous lesson had to be learned. This is why we needed him then and why we need him now.

Godard Mon Amour Movie Review

The filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, who this movie is about, has said of this Michel Hazanavicius film that it’s ‘A stupid, stupid idea.’ This quote is then put on the poster and why not? Hazanavicius knew right there that he got it right. You can’t get a bigger endorsement, in my opinion. Michel Hazanavicius, director of ‘The Artist,’ which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, now gives us the fairly humorous ‘Godard Mon Amour,’ a subtitled French film originally titled ‘Le Redoutable.’ In ‘The Artist,’ he showed us the world of silent films by introducing us to one of its actors and focusing heavily on that star’s world. In ‘Godard Mon Amour,’ we meet a truly innovative filmmaker from the 1960’s named Jean-Luc Godard (Garrel) when he’s in a state of flux. Already a successful director in the eyes of the public and of the critics with films such as, ‘Breathless,’ ‘Contempt’ and ‘Pierrot le Fou’ he decides he wants to be a revolutionary. He wants more out of life and desires to give more to the world through cinema.

We meet him in 1967 when Godard was regarded as one of the most gifted directors of his generation. He was very avant-garde because about ten years previously, he got involved in the ‘Nouvelle Vague,’ a group of French movie directors who came together to shrink away from the cinema of the day that was being created, to give films a more expressive voice.

While making his new movie, ‘La Chinoise,’ he starts doubting everything he has ever believed in. He feels he’s old (he’s thirty-seven) and out of touch and marrying an actress Anne Wiazemsky (Martin) almost twenty years his junior, doesn’t help much. She falls in love with his passion and his talent but as he gets more distracted with his heavy interest in politics, he pays less and less attention to her, at one point telling her that love can wait for later. He is always speaking as though his life means nothing but the cinema and when he has switched to politics only, his love life falls in order. He tells her he doesn’t have it in him to make a romantic film, saying, ‘Enough with the dictatorship of sentiments… sentiments don’t make revolutions.’ While loving and attentive early on, as the film continues, she’s starting to see what this means for their future. Previous to marrying him, she thought he was fascinating, unpredictable, charming and funny but before long comes to grip with the fact that he’s miserable and therefore incapable of thinking of anyone but himself. To support her husband, the young bride finds herself running from the police during student marches and protests rather than making films with him, even boycotting the Cannes Film Festival during the strikes of the following year.

The cinematography is outstanding and worth watching for that alone. The comedy, when it kicks in, rivals that of early Woody Allen pictures but takes place so far into the film that you may lose interesting getting there. Like the filmmaker Godard himself eventually became, Hazanavicius, is looking for something other than a joke to entertain you. I’d like to go on record as saying that if the film doesn’t please your palate right away, don’t give up on it. It drags on at first but does get better. There’s a lot of ground to cover and the clever way that this profound character is revealed at such a heavy turning point in his life, shouldn’t be missed by anyone who is looking for something meaningful. Hazanavicius is relaying to his audience a time when the filmmaker was trying to stay relevant. He’ll be criticized for creatively yet harshly revealing this time in Godard’s life but it doesn’t mean it should not have been explored.

Molly’s Game – Movie Review

Molly’s Game is an incredibly intelligent film.  It’s the true story of an Olympic-class skier, Molly Bloom (Chastain) who, much to the chagrin of her father, Larry (Costner), who wanted her to be a lawyer, ended up running an exclusive high-stakes poker game and eventually needing a lawyer herself.  That lawyer is Charlie Jaffey (Elba), one of the best in the area.  Before I get any further into the story, I’ll tell you more about the performances of Elba and Chastain.  First of all, the chemistry between them is palpable; very strong.  They’re totally in sync with one another and they absolutely must work together more often.  Once audiences see this movie, they’ll agree and demand it.  Jaffey is a criminal defense lawyer who agrees to work for her, on credit, essentially.  After some pleading and reasoning, just short of begging, on her part and after he sees how she has been rooked, she convinces him to do what’s right for someone other than himself and his bank account.

She was a game runner in L.A. and N.Y. and was very successful.  At her tables sat art dealers, rappers, politicians, Hollywood elite and unbeknownst to her, Russian mobsters and the FBI.  After being incredibly safe, or so she thought, controlling everything that went on at her tables, she gets caught.  The girls she hired to bring in clients, a job she first had before going on her own, were always professional and she stayed close to the clients but never mixed business with pleasure.  Regardless, she awakens to a phone call in the middle of the night.  The FBI is at the door with a warrant for her arrest.

The movie starts with her explaining how many times she has beaten the odds.  After getting to know her, you begin to explore the idea that this time she hasn’t.  However, as the story progresses, you’re sure her luck will pull her through.  The saying isn’t Lady Luck for no reason, right?  As I say that, I’ll add that what’s glorious about the script is as soon as you’re sure all will work out for her, again, something happens that has you doubting it.  No matter, you’re rooting for her to come out on top but Jessica Chastain always has a way to pull you into the characters she portrays.  Even with the fact that Molly could be technically breaking the law, you are still on her side.  You’re hoping Jaffey will find a loophole in the system that will have her safe and sound.

Molly wanted to go to law school as much as her father did but chose to follow a path of getting out of the house and getting rich fast instead.  In the beginning, when she’s getting into poker, she doesn’t think she’s breaking the law.  She’s running games only for tips and not taking a percentage, which is where the law is broken, but when she gets paranoid, things change fast and the more her games bring in, the more people want a piece of it and of her.  It’s through reading her memoirs and hearing the rest of the story, such as how deep she was into the Russian mob, that Jaffey decides he must prove her innocence… even despite his client.  For the first time in her life, someone doesn’t want a piece of her.  Jaffey believes in and sees her as a person worth saving.  How does she see herself?

‘Molly’s Game’ is fast-paced, thrilling and turns the game of Texas Hold ‘Em into something to be envied.  The dialogue intricately explains the game and by the time you’re done watching the movie, you’re practically ready to head to Vegas.  Check this movie out as soon as you can.  The acting is fantastic, the script is Oscar worthy and, as I’ve made clear, it’s virtually impossible to lose interest.  As the story progresses, you believe the good luck that has always followed her terribly bad luck, will pull her through any situation but as soon as you’re certain, more bad luck befalls her.  It’s maddening but a good time.  After watching it, you might feel compelled to Google Molly Bloom and see who the real players are.

Alan Sorkin, known more for writing ‘Jobs’, ‘The American President’ and ‘A Few Good Men’ and producing such titles as ‘The Newsroom’ and ‘The West Wing’ makes his directorial debut with this film and treats the story right by giving you the complete story, leaving no stone unturned.  You’ll agree that from now on, Sorkin should always direct what he has written instead of putting others in charge of something he’s clearly capable of doing himself.
