âMaâ is a moderately gripping, riveting movie with a few good jump-scares but canât quite live up to the genre that itâs labeled as. IMDB has it listed as a Horror/Thriller and the trailer sold us on the fact that this would be a terrifying movie. I generally count on a movie defined as a Horror to scare me at some point. Evil resurfaces in Derry as director Andy Muschietti reunites the Losers Clubâyoung and adultâin a return to where it all began with âIt Chapter Two.â The film is Muschiettiâs follow-up to 2017âs critically acclaimed and massive worldwide box office hit âIT,â which grossed over $700 million globally. Both redefining and transcending the genre, âITâ became part of the cultural zeitgeist as well as the highest-grossing horror film of all time.
Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, âIt Chapter Twoâ brings the charactersâwhoâve long since gone their separate waysâback together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.

The Intruder Movie Review
Best use of the word ‘capiche’ ever. Okay. Iâll be honest. If you like this sort of movie, youâre going to enjoy this one. I say that with confidence because of the performances. However, I’d like to suggest to you that you see it with a large audience. Their reactions to parts of the film, and to the characters, made it more delightful. My audience was laughing, groaning, screaming and even warning, at just the right moments. They were doing this as if what they had to say would be heard and their suggestions adhered to and because of them, it added to the experience.
They werenât loud or annoying. They knew exactly what I knew but were livelier and more drawn to act rather than hold it in. I wanted to say the same things to these characters, trust me. I mean, how many signs does the person up on that screen need before they do something about a bad situation?!? The answer to that question for âThe Intruderâ might be that thereâll never be enough. Dennis Quaidâs character, Charlie, had free reign to do whatever he wanted to these people because he wasnât stopped… for some reason, couldnât be stopped. The quick take on it is that youâll be entertained by this talented cast⊠especially by Quaid! Heâs downright creepy as hell in this! Through his character, âThe Intruderâ delivers one of the biggest jump-scares Iâve ever seen⊠and Iâm usually quite prepared for them.Â
Here’s the plot. A nice- and nice-looking young couple, Scott (Ealy) and Annie (Good) have moved up in the world and drive up to the Napa Valley to take a look at a beautiful piece of land with a gorgeous house. Scott isnât as crazy about the house as his wife Annie but can see itâs potential. Annie falls in love with it immediately and wouldnât change a thing. The owner, Charlie, who wants to sell it to them, has a peculiar fondness for, almost a relationship with the house. In fact, thereâs probably a video somewhere that would disturb us all, thatâs how close to it he is. He does sell it to them but doesnât stop his upkeep of the property. He makes his presence known first with simple little visits to mow the lawn. These become more frequent and, at first, itâs odd but he’s welcome. Annie works at home alone while Scott works almost ninety-minutes away in San Francisco. She isnât bothered by his pop-ins but as they convert from pop-ins to a regular thing, Scott is more and more disconcerted and uncomfortable, especially when Charlie disagrees with changes and actually feels he has a say in what the couple does to their home. Charlie’s tapestry⊠donât mess with the tapestry. Quickly, Charlie becomes a bit too chummy with Annie which has not gone by unnoticed by Scott. As I’ve mentioned, Annie doesnât mind the attention.
As we get further into the movie, we see what Charlie is up to and why. He does start to feel as close to Annie as he does to his home which is definitely unnatural. It becomes apparent, he now wants them both. Quaid then turns up the eerie factor, yet Annie still isnât alarmed?! Scott is practically banging his head against the wall trying to make her see that something is not right about Charlieâs presence. Neither man is subtle about how they feel toward one another, either, which keeps you somewhat exhilarated. When Scott has had enough and finally confronts Charlie face-to-face, they square off with one another. Itâs an intense scene and the movie continues to build on the tension from there.
The way director Deon Taylor reveals the monster lurking around this coupleâs home is often amusing but works to terrify because when people are insane, you not only donât know what theyâll do but what theyâve done; what theyâre capable of. They donât have a button that turns off the crazy and they can turn into something you canât handle. Something you’d never see coming. This is how Taylor approaches his desire to make his characters real. However, with what Annie and Scott have learned and what has happened⊠whoâd be this shortsighted or gullible as to continue to put themselves in the role of the potential victim? Scott wouldn’t. Annie wouldnât. I just donât see it as a believable plotline.
Nonetheless, its irrationality is what makes it worth a watch. Hey, Hollywood! Quaid has a new genre! He needs more of these roles. My view of ‘The Intruder’ is that it’s a fresh take on something weâve seen before. That fresh take was something I was appreciative of but parts of the script are a little too loose. The thought behind the story will be hard to believe… but for a revolving door idea⊠it frankly isnât all that bad.

PET SEMATARY MOVIE REVIEW
I went in to âPet Semataryâ thinking, âWhy?â Why does Hollywood insist on the remakes? I enjoyed the original film. Canât we just leave it alone? I went into the new movie thinking this couldnât touch it, let alone top it. It was as simple as that. I even defiantly crossed my arms. However, after such feelings of reluctance and misgivings, Iâm happy to report that I was fairly impressed. Iâm embarrassed about my skepticism. The filmâs new directing team of Kevin Kölsch, Dennis Widmyer did a remarkable job of creating for their audience a sense of tension and unease which has everyone immediately on edge. You are not sitting back to relax until itâs time to stand up and leave the theatre. What the filmmakers do here is grant you access into the lives of Louis (Clarke) and his family, knowing full well youâll get to know them, care for them and fall for them… especially their adorable children. You’ll fear for what theyâre about to go through. This is used marvelously. If you’re as reluctant as I was, another reason to drop your concerns over âPet Semataryâ is that the script doesnât exactly follow the original writing or the first film. The application of a few new angles improves it in ways that are tangible.
When the film starts, we see the family car covered with bloody handprints. A sort of whiff of whatâs to come for this sweet, unsuspecting family as they settle into their new home after moving from Boston to Maine is in the air. The implication of that handprint is significant in setting up for you that someone is in serious trouble. In all seriousness, this gets spooky! There are plenty of âjump scaresâ so hide your eyes! Be prepared.Â
What I also relished in was the comical manner with which they told their narrative, how they made this family more approachable and relatable, especially facing the most hair-raising moments is delicious. You can tell that Kölsch and Widmyer had a lot of fun with making this.
The family cat, Church, gets hit by a car and dies. With the help of their friendly neighbor Jud (Lithgow), Louis is able to resurrect the cat for his beloved daughter Ellie, played expertly by the young JetĂ© Laurence, who Jud has also grown very fond of. Where they bury the loveable kitty is on the other side of the pet sematary, so spelled because it’s where children in the area bury their pets when they pass on. Jud knows from experience why they shouldnât be doing this but has confidence this time that itâll work out fine. Best laid plans and all. By this time, Louis and his wife, Rachel (Seimetz) have started having distressing visions but they increase after this and the film intensifies.
The cinematography gloriously sets the tone that keeps you engaged, and I canât say enough about the inventive editing. If you didnât see the original, you wonât miss a big change in the plot which was an essential twist for the directors to make this their own. As you get more familiar with the family, thereâs also a storyline involving Rachelâs sister. This is excellent because this is where the movie begins to address death. It’s dealt with harmoniously, even though Louis and Rachel differ on life after death. Where all of this leads is horrific and unsettling⊠terrifying. If youâre a fan of horror, this was respectably creepy and spine-chilling. If youâre a fan of Stephen King, you wonât be disappointed.
