At first, I found it somewhat odd that a film would be released about tennis pros Venus and Serena Williams’ father, Richard Williams (Smith), and not about them. But giving it more thought, that’s essentially in title only, as this is most definitely about the girls and who they grew up to be. ​

The “Belfast” storyline is deeply personal for writer/director Kenneth Branagh because what you see play out in the film is what Branagh recalls seeing in his neighborhood when he was growing up. The 1960s in Northern Ireland was a time of great tumult between the Catholics and the Protestants.
