The Upside – Movie Review

The upside of ā€˜The Upside’ is that it promises a buddy comedy and delivers that and more. It’s entertaining and humorous but goes deeper as a friendship between the two main characters grows. It’s based off the French film ā€œThe Intouchablesā€ which is a story about a rich, white paraplegic who hires a black assistant. Everything about that in today’s society seems untouchable but if you don’t look at race, the film’s quite charming. See it as two people helping each other and both learning from one another and you’ll see the original vision or intent of Olivier Nakache and Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, the writers of ā€˜The Intouchables,’ message. That message is that friendship sees no color.

Ā ā€˜The Upside’ is about Phillip Lacasse (Cranston) a disabled billionaire confined to a wheelchair, on the search for a new employee. He’s paralyzed from his neck down and, with the help of his secretary, Yvonne Pendleton (Kidman), he’s looking for a live-in caregiver. Easy enough premise. Phillip sees Dell Scott (Hart) move his way through to the front of the applicants and is intrigued. After introductions, he decides to make Dell an offer. Finding that the job isn’t for him, Dell originally turns it down but recent events in his life have left him homeless. Once he finds out the offer comes with housing, he takes the position. This tests him because he rarely takes care of himself, let alone be needed to care for another man’s entire well-being. Dell has a son he isn’t exactly father-of-the-year to so watching his character grow is possibly the biggest delight of the movie. There always seems to be some tension between the two men, be it testosterone or jealousy on both sides, but that’s another part of the magic. Dell has to face that he’s never done anything for anyone but himself. And then there’s Phillip. He’s hiding in his misery and contempt for what he no longer has and needs to see what he does have. Dell learns to appreciate the finer things as he is forced to take Phil to the Opera and is introduced to new things such as fine art. On the other hand, Phil must finally confront the fact that the wife he lost to cancer isn’t coming back. He’s broken but alive and should value what he does have. Dell’s tactics help him concede that he needs to work on being happy.

Ā These characters are portrayed perfectly by pairing Cranston and Hart. It was a joy watching them get to know one another, learn from one another and also get irritated and annoyed with one another. These actors had impeccable chemistry. They never once tried to outperform the other or better each other, instead, worked in perfect tandem to bring their audience a story they could believe and possibly connect with. I’ve seen a lot of negative words being slung its way but ignore those. See this movie. ā€˜The Upside’ comes out this weekend. Go to the theatre. The story is restorative and satisfying, just what some might need today. I see it as a necessary reminder that we’re all in this together. It’s loving, and you’ll relish the fresh take on the buddy movie. It’s unique and it’s, quite simply, sweet.

Vice Movie Review

As you peruse the listings of what’s playing at your local theatre this holiday season, you’ll come across this film which is about Dick Cheney. When you do, you might say to yourself that the last thing you’d want to see is a movie about a person who’s mostly considered malevolent, selfish and unscrupulous. I’m here to suggest you rethink that decision. ā€˜Vice’ doesn’t glorify him nor let Cheney off the hook by any stretch of the imagination but rather explains some of the things he did and why he did them in an extremely entertaining and compelling fashion. It takes us through his early life of getting married, having kids and his eventual move into politics. His dream was to work in the White House and as his ambitions grew, so did his list of contacts. These contacts would later come into play and make big impacts on our country… not in a good way. Director Adam McKay cleverly inserts the dirty tricks that Cheney learns on his path to the Vice Presidency. Cheney uses them to gain extreme power, even more than President George Bush realize he has. One of the most unfortunate events in his life, for us that is, was that he met Donald ā€˜Rummy’ Rumsfeld (Carell). He was a terrible influence. It’s a shame these two ever met. ‘We the People,’ when Bush was in office, may not have paid attention to just how tainted he was. However, earlier in Rumsfeld’s career, Washington did, and he was removed. Knowing how devious he was, Cheney kept him in mind when he got into a position to bring him back. Cheney also learned from a young up and comer named Anthony Scalia all about the Unitary Executive Theory. When used, it gave the person in position the ability to override tedious checks and balances, especially during times of war. It was the kind of power wielded by kings and dictators. He knew that Rumsfeld would back him when he wanted to use it.

 

The film is an outstanding rundown of events throughout Cheney’s life that made him the man he became, often concentrating on the bland to get to know him. Christian Bale, who stars as Cheney, gives a remarkable performance selling his Cheney as eager and driven but not cruel… or at least not meaning to be. It’s suggested that his wife Lynne (Adams) is the more power hungry of the two. McKay implies that the young man who just wanted to drink and have fun found himself wanting to do nothing but please Lynne which is what ultimately brought us to Cheney making all of the calls in the White House.

 

You’ll be saddened, even sickened, when you see just how close we came to having everything we’re still fighting for today. This point when Reagan removes the solar panels Carter had installed on the White House to promote something called solar energy. We can’t have that, now can we? People in the oil business would lose money! Yep! Wealthy families and businesses, tired of paying taxes, make all the rules in their favor and continue to get in the way of progress. ā€˜Vice’ doesn’t shy away from telling you this. McKay blames the Republican-led governments for where we are today, but he does also humanize the subject of the film. Maybe decisions he made were because he believed he was doing the right thing, not because he was evil. That’s up to you to decide. Pay very close attention while watching as so much is examined. Depending on your own theories on certain matters you may feel vindicated… or maybe awakened. That said, I believe ā€˜Vice’ is an absolute must-see! I watched it and was so intrigued by it, I watched it again. McKay uses humorous imagery and staging to relax you but then he shifts the narrative to then terrify you as you witness exactly how ruthless people got into positions of power and remain there still today. See it for the acting. See it to alter your perception of or learn more about the Bush era. Just see this movie.

Welcome to Marwen

A quick synopsis of ā€˜Welcome to Marwen’ could be that the movie is an unusual but inspiring story about an unfortunate situation that happened to an exceptional illustrator turned famous photographer. However, it’s much more. Why he became a photographer is where the heart of the story lies. The film, directed by Robert Zemeckis of ā€˜Back to the Future’ fame, is based on the true story of Mark Hogencamp (Carell), who was beaten severely by five men. He was attacked after drinking too much, at the bar he frequented, led to his talking too much.Ā  To these strangers he had just met he mentions a little something he likes to do to be closer to women, or as he put it, feel their essence. He admits to wearing high heels. Shocking the men, they call him queer and assault him, each delivering punches that cause severe trauma to his body, most importantly to his head. The blows were so distressing to him that Mark no longer has a memory of anything before the attack… not even of who he was. To handle what it went through, his brain dumped everything that wasn’t essential to survival. Because of this, Mark can no longer draw as he had before or even function normally. A nurse has to go to his residence to check up on him because he has no true sense of how to care for himself properly.

Ā Seemingly wanting to work through the worst of it in some capacity, he still practices art but now it’s more cathartic for him. Instead of paper and pencil, Mark uses dolls and a camera. He’s turned his backyard into the imaginary town of Marwen in Belgium during WWII. In this town he’s built a world where he, or the doll of himself named ‘Hogie,’ is in peril. He photographs the dolls making real-life movements, not unlike what you’d find in a stop-motion film. And in Marwen, unlike in the bar where he was jumped, he gets to stage his rescue. He controls it all. Catching onto this, it doesn’t take long for you to notice that the five men who attacked him are represented here, as well, as five Nazi’s constantly running him down. His eventual salvation always comes by way of female dolls that are characterizations of real women in his life. These women have encouraged or enlightened Mark in some way. Most of them anyway. Enter a new neighbor, Nicol (Mann), who moves in across the street. When she shows up, his depiction of perfection gets shaken up.Ā 

When she enters the picture is also when the movie gets a bit strange. Strange could be either good or bad depending on how you look at things. Dolls are creepy, to begin with, so there’s that, but to be honest, how they’re used here is rather benign. Though the female dolls are exceptional beauties, until Nicol comes along he doesn’t pose them romantically or sexually at all. Well, there is one topless scene but it’s not to satisfy any lust within him. A doll named Deja and the Nicol doll that he creates immediately after meeting her are particularly important. They’re used by Zemeckis to reveal that through them he’s more comfortable communicating what he wants of or what he thinks is the reality in his life. Mark desperately needs someone to remind him that the fiction he has created isn’t real. Art may imitate life to a degree, but it can’t take over or you’ll miss out on genuine opportunities… which Mark almost does. Luckily for him, not everyone feels the need to placate his inner child. The film is heavy at times but very creative and imaginative. Carrel has incredible depth in his performance of this trauma victim. If you enjoy films that carry you away from your daily burden’s, ā€˜Welcome to Marwen’ will accommodate you quite nicely.

Once Upon a Deadpool

With the title and the time of its release, did expect to get something relating to Christmas in the film. This did not happen unless you count a Santa hanging on the wall as Christmas. That said, I guess to fans of the film, and of the genre, it’ll be seen as a Christmas gift. But if you want to see it, you better hurry! It’s only playing in theatres starting today December 12th until Christmas Eve. You have twelve days to see this present from Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) to You.

What you’re getting is a bedtime story being read to actor Fred Savage. Savage awakens, essentially on the set of the film ā€˜The Princess Bride.’ In that film, he’s a child who spends his time in bed listening to the tale of an adventure that’s being read to him by his grandfather. This time he’s tied up in that same bed, or a reasonable facsimile, being forced to lay there and hear a Deadpool narrative delivered to him by Deadpool himself. The story is a PG-13 version of ā€˜Deadpool’ and ā€˜Deadpool 2,’ concentrating more on ā€˜Deadpool 2’ where he, creates his own team of rogue mutants to save a young mutant from himself and from Cable (Josh Brolin) who has come from the future to end his terror before it can begin. The film expands on the Deadpool character and introduces several cherished Marvel superheroes and villains who every comic fan will remember.

In ā€˜Once Upon a Deadpool,’ the Fred Savage scenes more than makeup for what Fox had to do to keep it feature length after gutting and removing what made it Rated R in the first place. The F-bombs and the extreme violence are replaced with acceptable words and with story time explanations as to what is missing. At this time, Deadpool reveals to Savage that he’s unable to cuss and why. That in a PG-13 film, you’re only allowed one F-word, 2 shits and one glass of wine. As he discloses more of the rules and continues on with the story, there’s some hysterical back and forth, as I’m sure you had no doubt there would be. You’re essentially seeing ā€˜Deadpool 2’ with interjections of hilarity.

So why do this? Reynolds would only agree to it if one dollar from every ticket sold went to the charity, ā€˜Fuck Cancer,’ or to keep it family friendly, ā€˜Fudge Cancer.’ When you’re choosing a movie to see, keep that in mind. But why restructure a successful film and retell it as a PG-13? The simple answer is, so you can take your children to see one of your favorite superheroes! The character is foul-mouthed, and the violence is over the top in this franchise but with this version, Fox proves that it doesn’t need to be. However, I wouldn’t worry that they’ll change Deadpool if a third film is made. It took a lot of convincing to get Reynolds to agree to this in the first place.

*Stay through to the very end because, after the credits roll, there’s a loving tribute to Stan Lee.

Swimming With Men Movie Review

ā€˜Swimming with Men,’ is a British comedy from, Oliver Parker, the director of ā€˜Johnny English Reborn,’ ā€˜The Importance of BeingEarnest’ and ā€˜An Ideal Husband.’ Putting it in the category of comedy fits to a degree but not fully in that the movie struggles at times focusing on who their natural audience member will be. It often gives off a heavy vibe rather than a light one and isn’t terribly funny. To its detriment, the story doesn’t set the viewer on the right path to begin with. Your expectations of the film are set toward one direction when the film runs off in another. It winds its way down several paths to find its eventual ending. Working for it is the fact that what that ending turns out to be, is not what you necessarily saw coming. You could compare ā€˜Swimming with Men’ to movies like, ā€˜The Full Monty’ but that said, it doesn’t quite meet those heights.

The film’s protagonist is Eric Scott, Rob Brydon from ā€˜The Trip’ movies, who becomes his own antagonist by inventing troubles that are not there. This will only frustrate you as the story goes on. When we’re introduced to Eric, we see that he’s in the midst of a mid-life crisis. He’s bored with his mundane accounting position at work, his son is giving him a hard time and then there’s his wife, Heather (Jane Horrocks). Without any real reason, he imagines she’s out to get him. What’s peculiar is that instead of attempting to tread water with Heather, who’s more than willing to float along with Eric, he’s running away from her. He’d prefer to spend time at the gym. This is where he meets a gaggle of men who are in similar situations in their lives. They, too, feel that they’re the odd men out and are misplaced in their current stations in life.

The men invite Eric to join their exclusive swim club where men who end up, ā€˜At the bottom of the pool’ literally and figuratively, meet toforget the world outside of the water. Here they can escape the callousjudgments, petty rivalries, disappointments, and pressures of life on dry land.

Eric is needed to create a particular maneuver they’d like to form so, as it turns out, they come into his life at the right time as much as he does theirs. Where the comedy comes in is getting to know each of them. That being the case, even they don’t necessarily set the tone for the comedy genre. I’d put this in the drama department myself. Don’t get me wrong; there are some laughs. These men getting to know Eric, especially scenes like when they give him ā€˜Fight Club’ type rules of their swim club, are comical. The men take their love of the sport of synchronized swimming very seriously. They’re told about a men’s league where they can start swimming, professionally. The sport isn’t recognized officially by the Olympics, but they get a chance to represent their country in the Men’s World Championship. Some members of the group aren’t interested but Eric sees it as a way to feel a part of something and soon the rest do, too. Quite surprisingly, especially to them, they end up doing quite well at the competition.

In a touching scene, Ted (Carter) gives Eric a message that awakens him from his stupor and there’s a lively scene right before the credits that show he has truly changed inside. Though the movie might not always reach the goal of amusing you as you had hoped, there’s something you learn at the end of the film that makes everything you’ve seen worth the time you’ve put in. The one real disappointment is that if the filmmakers had nailed down the exact genre they wanted to be, ā€˜Swimming with Men’ would have been all the better for it. As it turns out, it’s a likable watch for a matinee or to catch while flipping through your cable box.

The Favourite Movie Review

I recommend you drop everything and see this on the big screen immediately! There’s a reason why so many films come out toward the end of the year. Often that logic is based upon the fact that they’ve saved the best for the last. That would be the case here. ā€˜The Favourite’ is a significant contribution to the films of 2018. It even far surpassed my expectations in fact. It’s masterfully crafted and incredibly well written. The three lead actresses are exceptionally strong in this, the latest work from the skilled raconteur of ā€˜The Lobster’ and ā€˜The Killing of a Sacred Deer,’ Yorgos Lanthimos.

ā€˜The Favourite’ does have an altogether different spirit from either of his previous films. If you do have a strong opinion of his earlier work, you shouldn’t necessarily base your decision on whether or not to see this on your opinion of them. One reason to sit down and give this a watch that stands out above the others is that those films didn’t have this exceptional trio of women in their cast. These same actresses will now be giving the Academy a difficult choice over who to choose for an award and for which award. Not a bad pickle to be in but one they’ll be in to be sure.

The script by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara was more comical than I had expected it to be which was quite a pleasant surprise. Getting to know the women and fully coming to realize the rivalry between them for the favor of the Queen was as delicious as waiting for a steak to cook that had been marinating all day. The performances undeniably complement the script. That said, some accents can make it hard to understand exactly what they’re saying at times, but this doesn’t distract from your overall enjoyment of the film. You won’t miss the sharp intellect written into the dialogue and the keen wit it took to come up with the story in the first place.

The film is set in England, early in the 18th century. Olivia Colman plays ailing Queen Anne who finds more than just a friendship in Lady Sarah, played by Rachel Weisz. With the position she has put herself, Lady Sarah is essentially running the country. The Queen fully trusts her and makes no decision without her input. Enter young Abigail (Stone) who’s fallen on hard times. She hopes, since they are cousins, Lady Sarah will give her a position in the palace. Jealous of the beautiful young woman, yet enamored with her charms, Sarah gives her work and a place to stay and proceeds to get to know her. With more than kitchen work on her mind, Abigail uses her position with Sarah to get to know the Queen more. Soon, she finds herself in the catbird seat where she accidentally learns more about Sarah and Anne’s relationship than she had bargained for. Being in the right place at the right time, Abigail sees that they’re lovers, as well. She then decides to use this knowledge to her full advantage.

As Abigail moves her piece on the chessboard of life, Sarah starts to get suspicious. The music, politics, relationships, and discourse build from there. The story is impressively structured, and it’ll keep you riveted throughout, enough that I feel confident you’ll walk away possibly considering ā€˜The Favourite’ one of your favorites for 2018. The ending is pure Lanthimos. When Sarah questions Abigail about whether she thinks she has won, you’re eventually shown what winning would be if she does. A life of being at the queen’s beck and call to rub her ā€˜leg’ at a moments notice doesn’t sound fun. Is this the life she was looking forward to?

What Men Want Red Band Trailer

Ali Davis (Taraji P. Henson) is a successful sports agent who’s constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world… until she gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts! With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest (Aldis Hodge) to the test.

Ralph Breaks the Internet Movie Review

“Ralph Breaks the Internet” proves that Disney Animation can make a sequel based on its legacy of great movies, and does not “Wreck-It”. “Ralph” is a follow-up edition to “Wreck-It Ralph”, which introduced some arcade video game characters. It had a smart story line and large group of quirky, yet lovable, characters. This new update to the continuing “Ralph” story takes two main characters beyond the walls of Litwak’s Arcade. They venture out into the Internet, which Ralph promptly breaks… The online community is not ready for the big, lovable doofus of Ralph, so he takes the Internet by storm.

In the first movie (“Wreck-It Ralph”), Ralph (John C. Reilly) has a job in an arcade game called “Fix-It Felix Jr.” Felix (Jack McBrayer) has met his true love Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch).Ā  Ralph’s best friend is Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), who is go-kart racer from “Sugar Rush”. Vanellope has a ‘glitch’, which gives her unusual functions. She is tired of her life in the Sugar Rush game, and she would like to see much more of the world. Ralph is very content with the state of things, while Vanellope needs to expand her horizons.

After a part breaks on the Sugar Rush game, Mr. Litwak (Ed O’Neill) is forced to unplug this game. All the characters rush out and now are homelessa. Litwak has just installed a router that connects to the Internet, so Ralph and Vanellope find their way into it. They have heard that a new part can be purchased on-line for the Sugar Rush game. They intend to go to that website and bid for that part. But when they bid way too much, they need to find a way to get money to pay for it. Ralph finds a site called BuzzTube, and it is run by an algorithm named Yesss (Taraji P. Henson). She explains that Ralph can become an Internet sensation by creating viral videos. That could get the money they need.

Vanellope and Ralph also find an online video game called ‘Slaughter Race’. It is dirty and grungy and there are no rules. Vanellope thinks it is the perfect world for her racing future. The best racer in that game is named Shank (Gal Gadot), and she has the best car and best skills. She and her crew raise havoc with all the online gamers, because she always wins. Vanellope has met her match with Shank, and she wants to stay in Slaughter Race forever to race her heart out.

When Vanellope goes to a Disney website and meets with all the other Disney Princesses. She likes them all, and they accept her as another real Princess – but she does not feel at home there. Ralph just wants to buy that part to fix Sugar Rush, and then get home to his game. But Ralph begins to worry that his best friend Vanellope will not be coming with him.

Ralph lets his worry and his doubt take over, and he does something really dumb. He wants to convince Vanellope that she should come back to the arcade with him. But Ralph’s plan backfires, in a really big way. The Internet is threatened by the bone-headed move that Ralph makes, and Vanellope is in real danger. Shank tries to help Vanellope, and also later on the Disney Princesses come to her rescue. Ralph finally learns a big lesson that friendship is stronger than distance. Vanellope can still be his best friend, even if they are in two different places. The Internet is saved, and Sugar Rush gets repaired…

“Ralph Breaks the Internet” takes the characters from the first movie and gives them a new and expanded universe to explore. Getting the two main game characters (Ralph and Vanellope) into the Internet-at-large is a terrific concept. Ralph is a ‘fish out of water’ type, while Vanellope embraces all that the new horizons can offer to her. Because this is a Disney movie, all of the properties they own (Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, Disney Princesses, Winnie-the-Pooh, and others) all make a brief appearance.

John C. Reilly does the voice of Ralph, and he proves himself to be a work horse, not a show horse. He is a steady and reliable character voice for the big lug, and it fits him perfectly. Gal Gadot does the voice of Shank, the attractive and super-cool driver in the ‘Slaughter Race’ online game. She is strong and capable, and she becomes a new friend to Vanellope. Taraji P. Henson plays Yesss, and her character is quite quirky. She searches for the next huge viral video, and she encourages Ralph to become a video star.

But then we come to the weakest part of this movie. Sarah Silverman does the voice of Vanellope. But her character’s voice is such a whiney, nasally and annoying voice that it can grate on your nerves. In the first movie, this character was introduced about midway into the stroy. So Vanellope’s voice gets a LOT more screen time in this movie. Vanellope is supposed to be cute and precocious character. But she leans heavy into being more annoying than sweet.
