“Boogie” is movie about growing up with ambitions and expectations that might seem far-fetched. The young high school basketball ball star is from an ethically Chinese background. There are few roles models in the NBA to whom he can relate. Growing up in New York City also gives him difficulties, in that there as many people biased against him from the White side of the city as from the Black side.

“The Map of Tiny Perfect Things” is fun little movie that takes the young adult romance concept into a ‘Dr. Who timey-wimey’ direction. This makes for a mostly “Perfect” take on an older movie concept – the Time Loop. Think of “Groundhog Day”, “Edge of Tomorrow”, and (most recently) “Palm Springs” — but for the high school kids.

“Minari” is a refreshing look at the struggles and triumphs of a family. Originally from Korea, this family immigrated to America to live in L.A. and then relocated to Arkansas. They are seemingly out-of-place in a very rural farm site. But the father’s desire to be a successful farmer is the driving force to keep them together.
“Saint Maud” is a bleak look at a misguided soul who confuses feeling Pain for receiving Love. The main character is a nurse, who should be be able to embrace life. Yet she is overwhelmed by a wrong-headed religious belief that her destiny is to die for God.

“Outside the Wire” is futuristic look at what warfare might come to, if people decide to leave more and more of the decisions up to the ‘machines’. For a future like that to take place, the leaders in charge will rely more on mechanical soldiers and devices that can out-think a mere human. These are people who are leading figures in their respective areas. Yet, to America as a whole, they are still just Negro boys – some think they are out to make some trouble.

“Sylvie’s Love” is a throwback to the mid 1960’s, into a era of hot jazz and warm hearts The Black culture shown on the screen is infused with a love of music, family, and pop culture. In this arrangement, the story touches on love found, then lost, and then found again. But only for a while… It is like a jazz cover of “La-La Land”, in a different key and with slowed-down tempo.

“Climate of the Hunter” is an odd mash-up of a low-budget horror movie and low-budget indie/art-house movie. The place where succeeds the most in the ‘low-budget’ part. Now, some low-budget movies can be well made and interesting – wanting to tell a unique story in a low-key manner. But, with a misguided concept – this can go off the rails pretty quickly. This movie boards the Express Train to Weird and never makes a stop…
