Horror movies can be intriguing, especially when they have a supernatural vibe. When asked to view “Wicked Witches of Dumpling Farm”, I hoped for some suspense from this independent film created by the Pickering Brothers, especially involving how the main character gets involved with Witches. Blinded by the Light is an incredibly inspirational film. It’s the story of a Pakistani teenager named Javed (Viveik Kalra) who’s going through a tremendous identity crisis. In a unique fashion, his story shows us that the most important thing in life is to discover who we are. Growing beyond childhood regularly takes being forced into it when we’re not ready. That nudge ofttimes comes from the most unlikely of places. It certainly does in Javed’s case. Read more

“Good Boys” sets up in the same tradition as “Super Bad” or “Booksmart”. There are people who hear of a wild and crazy party that will be held soon. They make up their minds that they will do anything to attend. But the guys who hear of the party are not college-age. They are not even high school age. They are in sixth-grade, and the big shindig in question is a ‘kissing party’ in the basement of one of the ‘cool kids’ from school. To them, it is a chance to get up into the ‘cool kid’ ranks, and one of them will meet up with the girl on whom he has a crush. Read more
“The Angry Birds Movie 2” is a movie sequel from the first version spawned out of a cell phone app video game. After you let that sink in, you may have questions. I must confess that I have never read the books this film is based on. That being said, I was still looking very forward to seeing this movie. The reason? A documentary about the books and their author, Alvin Schwartz, was released and I watched and reviewed it. I found the subjects of that documentary to be quite fascinating. Afterward, I couldn’t wait to see what the movie had in store for us. I was hoping it would stay especially true to the sketches of the monsters Schwartz’ illustrator, Stephen Gammell, came up with to kickstart his reader’s imaginations. I’m happy to say… they most definitely did.
This is an entertaining film! The writer and director of ‘The Kitchen’ is Andrea Berloff, who also wrote ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and ‘Sleepless.’ With this, she set out to pen a script for three female actors who could sink their teeth into the juicy roles that are usually given to their male counterparts. It’s meant to be a bit provocative, as well, but not so much so that it takes over the riveting nature of a reasonably well-made action/drama to include a distracting, ill-fitting romance of some sort. “The Art of Racing in the Rain” is based on a book of the same name. However, in this adaptation everyone involved is all wet. The story of a professional race driver, and the loves of his life, is told through the eyes of his trusted canine companion (named Enzo). But the story never rises above a weak melodrama with unoriginal plot points. Read more
