Anything Movie Review

If youā€™re interested in a narrative that has layers and depth, you need to see ā€˜Anything,ā€™ a film that represents anyone who has ever loved for any reason and who will give of themselvesā€¦ anything. Itā€™s a moving piece because we can all relate to the characters and their powerful emotions of love. I say this with certainty as weā€™ve all, for the most part, experienced a love where we have given and where we have received.

The characters in the film are complex and more intricate then one might think based on the pedestrian one-word title it was saddled with. However, that word, as you can tell based on what Iā€™ve written so far, plays an important role in the overall message of the story.

The main character is Early Landry. Heā€™s a middle-aged widower, played by character actor John Carroll Lynch of ā€˜Fargo,ā€™ who easily manipulates the audience into seeing this individual as both the prey and the preyed upon. At the moment Early is introduced to us, weā€™re seeing him through the eyes of his overbearing sister, Laurette (Tierney). Heā€™s depressed, suicidal and since the passing of his wife, needs some love and support, but not as much or the kind Laurette has in mind. Not really giving him much of a choice in the matter, she makes him aware of the fact that she wants him to move in with her so she can help him with his feelings of despair and with settling things from his old life in Mississippi to his new life with her in L.A. Early does move in with her. Though he doesnā€™t speak up for himself, itā€™s not hard to tell that heā€™s quickly growing tired of her. She speaks to him and treats him as if he were a child and itā€™s not long into his stay that he decides he has to move out and be on his own.

Without informing her, he gets himself a little apartment in an area of town she wouldnā€™t approve of. This is most likely done to keep her away. In a short time, he meets his transgender neighbor Freda Von Rhenburg (Bomer), who works the streets and often gets into trouble with men and when money gets tight. Being the gentleman that he is, heā€™s there for her, no matter what she needs and a hot and cold relationship develops. It doesnā€™t take long for them both to see whatā€™s good about the other and how deeply they need what the other has to offer. Perhaps at first getting to know Freda just might be the right thing to agitate Laurette but if thatā€™s what he had in mind then he was just as surprised by the materialization of their romance as we, the audience, are.
Theyā€™re an odd pairing but the performances both actors give to their roles accommodates the concept of their love and what the significance of a man from Mississippi being open-minded enough to accept the love of a man means today. I highly recommend this even though an obvious misstep is not casting a transgendered actress in the role of Freda. Regardless, Bomer is exceptional and deserves to be seen.

HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES Trailer

TALK TO THE GIRL,Ā SAVE THE WORLD. FROM DIRECTOR JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL, THIS IS THE OFFICIAL TRAILER FORĀ HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES

Based on a story by Neil GaimanĀ

From the raucous dual imaginations of fantasy laureate Neil Gaiman (ā€œAmerican Gods,ā€ CORALINE) and glam-rock multi-hyphenate John Cameron Mitchell (HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, SHORTBUS) comes the electrifying and singular pop extravaganza film, HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES.Ā  Enn (Alex Sharp) is a shy suburban London teenager in 1977, sneaking out with his best friends to after-hours punk parties. One night they stumble upon a bizarre gathering of sexy teenagers who seem like they are from another planet.Ā  In fact, they are from another planet, visiting Earth to complete a mysterious rite of passage.Ā  That doesnā€™t stop Enn from falling madly in love with Zan (Elle Fanning), a beautiful and rebellious alien teenager who, despite her allegiance to her strange colony, is fascinated by Enn. Together they embark on a delirious adventure through the kinetic punk rock world of 1970s London, inadvertently setting off a series of events that will lead to the ultimate showdown of punks vs. aliens, and test the limits of how far each of them will go for true love.Ā

Finding Your Feet Movie Review

Though the older crowd is the obvious target audience for a film like this, it can be and will be enjoyed by anyone who watches it, no matter what age the moviegoer happens to be. Richard Loncraineā€™s (The Missionary, Richard III, Band of Brothers) Finding Your Feet is an amusing, romantic comedy and a sweet and touching tale of two sisters reuniting after many years apart.

The reunion comes due to the fact that the younger of the two sisters, Sandra, played remarkably well by Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter, Shakespeare in Love, Vera Drake), leaves her husband, Mike (Sessions), when she catches him cheating on her with, Pamela (Lawrence), a woman Sandra thought was a friend of hers. This revelation happens when she sees them at an inopportune time at a party she and Mike are throwing for his retirement. She not only sees them kissing but then learns it has been going on for five years. Itā€™s rather difficult to watch her be humiliated even though our first introduction to Sandra is to find her rather stuffy.

Unable to trust or stay with him, she packs her bags and heads to the only place she knows sheā€™ll be safe, the doorstep of Bif (Imrie), her very liberal and independent-minded older sister. Actress Celia Imrie, who was also in Bridget Jones’s Baby, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Nanny McPhee, was outstanding in this part. The two actresses were believable as sisters in their authentic performances and their commitment to the roles. It was easy to like them and root for them.

It isnā€™t long before Bif, so named because as a little girl, Sandra couldnā€™t say Elizabeth, is trying to play matchmaker. Her friend Charlie (Spall) might be the perfect match for Sandra. Charlie, who lives on a houseboat after selling his home to pay for the care his ailing wife, Lilly (Sian Thomas), receives, is lonely, interesting and interested. Lilly is in the advanced stages of Alzheimerā€™s, something he doesnā€™t share with Sandra who, after what she recently went through, wouldnā€™t ever want to be the other woman. Bif, Sandra, Charlie and his widowed friend Ted (Hayman), dance away the blues at a dance class Sandra can’t help but get involved in. A lot of the humor in the film comes from this class, such as a line from actress Joanna Lumley who plays their friend, Jackie. She shares with the group that she and her husband broke up over religious difference, ā€˜He thought he was God. I didn’t.ā€™ Even though sheā€™s still bitter, itā€™s pleasant watching the members of the dance troupe accept Sandra and for Bif to observe her slowly become more like the person she remembered her sister was before marrying the man who killed her dreams. Sandra gave her younger years to what Mike wanted to be and do and forgot who she was in the process. Bif is now tasked with bringing her back to life.

It is a tale thatā€™s been told before but not quite in this fashion. With that said, you can see everything coming a mile away but with this cast and with the struggles the characters face, Loncraine manages to keep things fresh enough for you to stay fascinated in the story and you donā€™t much mind the predictable moments. The film is littered with the occasional character in a circumstance thatā€™s heartbreaking. These situations work as well as the comedy does and when the dance troupe starts a flash mob and ends up going on a trip to Rome because of it, youā€™re overjoyed that Sandra has finally gotten the message that itā€™s time she ā€˜went for it.ā€™ This is a feel-good piece, the pace is good, the dancing is believable and quite entertaining and thereā€™s also a wonderful soundtrack that takes you through the entire film. If youā€™re enjoying it, it continues through the end credits with the Elkie Brooks’ song Running to the Future. I recommend. Enjoy.

Love, Simon Movie Review

ā€˜Love, Simonā€™ is a touching story about a high school student named Simon (Robinson). He has a secret that he has kept from everyone in his life. That secret is that hes never told his family or friends that heā€™s gay. The film, in a way, encourages those who havenā€™t, to do the same. Why do I say that? Because it shines a light on how much his friends love him and how much support his family would give him. Thereā€™s no way he doesnā€™t know this, yet heā€™s still terrified to tell anyone. The reason for that is heā€™s focusing only on those people who wouldnā€™t approve, instead of those who love him enough not to care who he loves.

It’s also a coming of age story, like the many who have come before it, but thereā€™s something special here. If you can get past the bad jokes, some which are set up, so the audience will feel for Simon, some just cheesy and ineffective, youā€™ll truly enjoy the film. After those are out of the way, about halfway through, ā€˜Love, Simonā€™ finds its own voice instead of trying to be a crazy, teenage romp. Itā€™s an unusual movie with a terribly important subject and told in a brave and unique way but not until later in the film, when the filmmakers decide theyā€™re not trying to be ā€˜Revenge of the Nerdsā€™, ā€˜Sixteen Candleā€™s,ā€™ or your basic romantic comedy, will you feel that it is. Had they stayed away from the horrible character of the principal (Hale), it might not have been judged so harshly but at times it was so over the top, especially with him, that I canā€™t help mention how mediocre it could be at times. To break the vibe of faculty trying too hard to fit in comes the drama teacher, Ms. Albright, played by Natasha Rothwell. She was hysterical and itā€™s her class that not only gives Simon the first true place he can feel himself but gives the film its first real laughs, as well.

In the end, all Simon wants is to be accepted and that makes the film relatable. Most of us, at one point or another in our lives, have felt that very same way. The circumstances may have been different but being acknowledged as part of a pack has been ingrained in us. Simon is no different. The scenes primarily take place in his high school so the movie will have a younger audience who understands the roles of electronics and the complications of having them in their lives.

In the library, Simon begins an email exchange with someone who wishes to remain anonymous, as does Simon. This person calls himself ā€˜Blue.ā€™ After these emails begin, Simon desires more and more to meet him and tell the world that he loves him. What ends up happening is that Simon spends the rest of the film trying to figure out who Blue is. They do a great job of hiding this from you!

Simon struggles with his own way of coming out to everyone but, unlike Blue, doesnā€™t get to decide the time, someone chooses it for him. An all-student online chat has been created where the students do and say horrible things about one another and, in a scenario thatā€™s hard to believe would happen, Simonā€™s announcement is made here. Blue sees this and, afraid the same thing will happen to him, decides to step away.

Essentially, weā€™ve seen this movie before, just not with two young men. But, as Iā€™ve mentioned, when ā€˜Love, Simonā€™ shifts from comedy gear to a more serious tone, the movie stops trying to imitate and becomes a special piece to witness. What theyā€™ve done well, works to close the film and has you leaving with a sense of fulfillment. Itā€™s dramatic and emotional and wins you over because the rom-com formula doesnā€™t work and thatā€™s not hard to see but you will enjoy it for what it is.

Forever My Girl Movie Review

High School sweethearts, Liam (Roe) and Josie (Rothe) are about to get married. We open on Josie and her maid of honor, Kiera (Alexandria), getting her ready for her march down the aisle when through the door comes some devastatingly bad newsā€¦ her groom isnā€™t coming. We cut to eight years later and find out why he left sweet and innocent Josie before her brother could walk her to meet Liam at the altar. Fame and fortune came knocking on his door in a big way (think Blade Shelton) and Mr. Liam Page answered it with a fast lurch of enthusiasm and a bit of self-indulgence, not thinking much about who was getting left behind and hurt in the process. He no longer had time for a wife; only for himself. When we see Liam again, heā€™s on stage singing ā€œDonā€™t Water Down My Whiskey,ā€ which is not only quite good but Alex Roe does sing it himself for the film. Liam performs for a sell-out stadium crowd and has a team of people taking care of him. Fans scream for him to return to the stage after his last song, but he makes his way to his manager and insists he gets him a particular girl in the front row that he had been eyeballing all night.
Iā€™m thinking this is to get us a bit hot under the collar at his behavior. It doesnā€™t exactly work because we can tell right away that heā€™s isnā€™t like a sailor; isnā€™t ā€˜a girl in every portā€™ kind of guy. The girl he sees reminds him of Josie, for whom he has been unable to forget, though he had definitely left her behind to acheā€¦ alone. Itā€™s obvious in some of the following scenes that he has never really tried to rid his memory of her and that outside of casual sex, thinking of her is his only real connection to anyone.

Liam learns that his best friend from High School is killed in a car accident and he takes off for home, leaving behind an already scheduled tour and stunned manager and publicist losing his mind.
Here, the narrative gets a little confusing because he has become incredibly successful, which takes a lot of discipline and when he goes back home, itā€™s implied or downright said buy his father, Pastor Brian (Hickey) that he had gotten into drugs and was a bit of a mess. That perplexity notwithstanding, itā€™s a good build up, even though you do see whatā€™s coming. Though the story wants you to be really irritated with his character, you do like him and you hope that while heā€™s in town to go to his friends funeral, that heā€™ll run into Josie.
So, he runs into Josie and he tries to apologize for his behavior. He tells her that he knows he had put his wants and desires before hers. He wants her to believe him when he says he realizes that you can, basically, have your cake and eat it, too.

Happy to see sheā€™s had success as well, he goes to the flower shop that she owns, to ask her out. She shows him something else that his selfishness caused him to miss out on when he left. She introduces him to her daughter, Billy (Fortson). She was named after Liamā€™s mother. Seeing her and hearing her name, he immediately knows what he could never replace and what he missedā€¦ the birth of his daughter and being there for her and watching her grow up. Billy is smart, cute and nothing gets by her, much like the actress who played her.
Liam begs to be a part of her life and must now prove he is worthy to be in it. A scene where Billy complains about riding in his convertible is simply priceless. She doesnā€™t make jumping into fatherhood easy on him but they get used to one another and she warms up to him rather quickly. When he buys her a guitar, they bond over music and suddenly you can just imagine where a sequel could go.

Forever My Girl follows the pattern of formulaic scripts that have come before it. Itā€™s a, ā€˜boy leaves girl at altar to seek fame and fortune but his roots in the town and in family are buried deep and canā€™t be pulled out quite so easilyā€™ story. But at its core, itā€™s loving and it has a good message of forgiveness. It works. It has a slow-motion, playful montage scene to complete the look but it gives us something that many films of the genre do not; a strong leading male character whoā€™s sensitive and willing to admit heā€™s wrong and give up everything for his true loveā€¦Ā loves.

Phantom Thread Movie Reivew

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the best in the business. He has given usĀ Boogie Nights,Ā Magnolia,Ā There Will Be BloodĀ andĀ The MasterĀ and in knowing this, you are groomed ahead of time and fixed for a compelling story shot in an extraordinary way that will lead you into a world that you can believe exists beyond the shadow of a doubt… right next door. With Andersonā€™s new film Phantom Thread, itā€™s no different.
Even above the story, he cast one of the best actors in the business in Daniel Day-Lewis. Unfortunately for us, Day-Lewis has decided to make this film his last but what a way to go. This fascinating piece and his performance in it will not be forgotten, as their work together in There Will Be Blood will never be.

The opening of this intriguing tale is orchestrated with the movement of the actors.Ā  Right away, we are introduced to Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and are witness to what he does for a living. Ā He is a renowned couturiere, or fashion designer, in London in the 1950s, which were really the last decade when women of style had their clothes custom-crafted by garment makers. Ā Reynolds, who lives with his sister, is deeply superstitious and very eccentric with how he handles his work, believing his dead mother is all around him, encouraging his work. Ā He has always been taken care of and doesnā€™t quite know how to speak with women other than to order them around as he does his models. Heā€™s used to spending some time with women he beds, leading them on and then he moves away rather abruptly. Ā Heā€™s an incurable bachelor and believes marriage only leads to deceitā€¦ until he meets a waitress by the name of Alma (Krieps) who doesnā€™t play into this. Ā She questions and defies him, unlike any woman ever has, and heā€™s immediately intrigued. Ā Heā€™s both bothered and smitten by her at the same time and begins to see her as his muse. Ā Unlike most people he engages, Alma is unrefined and obnoxious and when she challenges him it throws him off. Ā Reynolds behaves like a spoiled child because he has always gotten his way. Ā He prefers to have the last word and with Alma, he doesnā€™t always get what he wants.

As one might expect from a Paul Thomas Anderson film, Phantom Thread is full of surprises. Ā What you think this movie will be by watching the trailer and what you believe is going on while youā€™re watching it might not be whatā€™s actually playing out. Anderson is also the cinematographer on the film and to give you the overall feeling of how people lived in the period, he had all of his equipment inside of a small house rather than using a soundstage which set the tone beautifully and helped lend to an aura of madness and authenticity. Ā Reynolds expects Alma to give more than heā€™s willing to give and as we go deeper into his psyche, we see the vulnerable boy the man holding the thread truly is.

This is an incredibly intelligent film, rich in characters with a beautiful score. Ā The chemistry between Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps is strong and Anderson takes advantage of it every chance he gets, using both their strengths and their weaknesses to bewilder his audience. Ā Youā€™ll love the buildup and the dialogue to the final moments. Ā It is slow to start but the payoff is well worth every second. Ā This is legitimately a brilliant film. Ā Youā€™ll want to see it more than once.
