Yesterday, everyone knew The Beatles. Today, only Jack remembers their songs.

He’s about to become a very big deal. From Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and Richard Curtis, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually and Notting Hill, comes a rock-n-roll comedy about music, dreams, friendship, and the long and winding road that leads to the love of your life.

Jack Malik (Himesh Patel, BBC’s Eastenders) is a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie (Lily James, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed … and he finds himself with a very complicated problem, indeed. 

Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, and with a little help from his steel-hearted American agent, Debra (Emmy winner Kate McKinnon), Jack’s fame explodes. But as his star rises, he risks losing Ellie — the one person who always believed in him. With the door between his old life and his new closing, Jack will need to get back to where he once belonged and prove that all you need is love.

Cold War Movie Review

If you’re looking for reasons to see ‘Cold War’ I’ll give you a few. One is that it’s said to have received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. After seeing it, I can believe this. Another is that Rotten Tomatoes has certified it as 93% Fresh. On to my reasons as to why you should make a trek to the theatre to watch this movie. Yes. I said it. There’s no waiting for home viewing with a movie this alluring. Its beauty is sophisticated, profound and slight. It doesn’t scream directly in your face but rather hits you when you revive the entity the film was to you from your memory. The black and white cinematography will look clean and quiet while whispers of genius glide across the screen and entices you to watch this lovely heartbreaking story of love. I promise you that you’ll not be able to look away. It’s a real treasure to observe. Part of why was the 4:3 aspect ratio used that allows the viewer to examine the picture as a piece of photographic art. By shrinking its scale, it’s also possible for the audience to see themselves in the characters or better relate to what they’re going through.

 

In the story, we have two main characters named Zula and Wiktor. She is a student and he’s her teacher at a school that advocates for Polish folk music and dance. ‘Cold War’ recounts the tale of Zula (Kulig), who’s a gifted singer, and Wiktor (Kot), her teacher and interestingly enough, a songwriter. When they meet, they fall instantly in love. Set in Poland in 1949, the lovers, who dream of being together once and for all, have not only their station in life but communism to worry about. Sadly, for the next fifteen years, this perfect pairing must perform a dance of hiding their relationship from everyone, while at the same time trying not to have the torch they carry for one another extinguished by their circumstances. They secretly meet one another whenever and wherever they can until they can stand it no longer and finally decide to leave and be together once and for all. Best laid plans, right? He leaves for the border where he waits for her to join him. However, afraid of what could happen to them, she doesn’t meet him. Realizing she’s not coming, he decides not to go back and goes on with her. Several years go by and during this time, she struggles deeply. Oh, if only she could find him aga… wait! Look! Here comes Wiktor who can always put a smile on her face. Well, not really. Though they do find one another, it isn’t long before they’re separated again. This storyline is repeated over and over. They’re doomed to a life of searching which is good for their art but terrible for their hearts.

She’s married when they meet once again in Paris. These scenes are the most rewarding. The music, and her performance, in particular, is outstanding. During this period, she’s drunk all the time and they’re both miserable but with so much working against them, how could anyone truly be happy? What’s most provocative about this ‘love story,’ is that when they find themselves together, it never works out. It’s as if they have longed for it so deeply, that’s all they know how to do. Wanting is one thing… having what you reach for is quite another. Who are Wiktor and Zula if not the two seeking one another? The ending, that I’m not revealing to you here, is superb. It couldn’t have been improved upon. All of that said, describing this film does nothing for what it essentially is. It’s magnificent. See it before Oscar season. It’ll most likely be everywhere.

Bohemian Rhapsody Movie Review

Bryan Singer, known for Superman Returns, X-Men and The Usual Suspects was the perfect choice to make a movie about Queen. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who could have caught and ceremonious displayed the man Freddie Mercury was, with such concentrated effort on Queen’s stunning and charismatic music at the same time, as Bryan Singer. They were outstanding performers with phenomenal talent but what you never knew about the band off stage, most especially their inventive and creative lead singer, is gloriously shown here. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a must-see. Rami Malek, who plays him, embodies Freddie so well it’s almost eerie to see. Singer bookends the film with Queen’s epic performance at Live Aid and watching Malek’s Mercury brings both joy and sorrow… for what we had and what we lost.

The film establishes for us the timeline that took Queen to rise to the top of the charts around the globe. They start out as a common club band who were headed nowhere. Freddie, a man desperately searching for a way to escape who he is and become who he knows he can be, reaches out to them when they lose their lead singer. They look him over and aren’t interested until he opens his mouth and blows them away with his surprisingly extraordinary set of pipes. On stage, the audience looks at him the same way the band did and weren’t inclined to give him a chance either until he impresses them with his stage presence, versatility and his ability to hit the high notes and hold it.

While this is a biopic about Queen, and it does include their brilliant songs throughout the entire film, Singer gets more deeply involved in Freddie than the other individual members. Singer knew, as Freddie knew, there was no Queen without him.

Since it examines what brought Freddie to this point and where it leads him just as much as it covers the group entirely, it might feel as if you’re invading his personal space but it only tackles what he would have allowed… only what you may have already known. It’s very respectful of who he was, while at the same time, removing the thinnest of veils for us to see who he loved, what he was able to give and how little he needed in return.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is an absolute delight. This is a fantastic tribute to Freddie, it’s a good night out at the movies and practically an opera on its own. If you’re not a Queen fan when you walk into the theatre to find your seat you will be by the time you stand up and walk out. The cast gives this dramatic script life while at the same Rami Malek brings Freddie Mercury back to life for just a moment. It’s not a stretch to assume he’ll be up for an Academy Award for his performance. You’ll love Mike Myers as Ray Foster, the man whose shortsightedness let them get away. Also, when you get home, watch Queen at Live Aid. It’s uncanny how very well the actors and filmmakers were at reproducing that moment for you.

Forever My Girl Movie Review

High School sweethearts, Liam (Roe) and Josie (Rothe) are about to get married. We open on Josie and her maid of honor, Kiera (Alexandria), getting her ready for her march down the aisle when through the door comes some devastatingly bad news… her groom isn’t coming. We cut to eight years later and find out why he left sweet and innocent Josie before her brother could walk her to meet Liam at the altar. Fame and fortune came knocking on his door in a big way (think Blade Shelton) and Mr. Liam Page answered it with a fast lurch of enthusiasm and a bit of self-indulgence, not thinking much about who was getting left behind and hurt in the process. He no longer had time for a wife; only for himself. When we see Liam again, he’s on stage singing “Don’t Water Down My Whiskey,” which is not only quite good but Alex Roe does sing it himself for the film. Liam performs for a sell-out stadium crowd and has a team of people taking care of him. Fans scream for him to return to the stage after his last song, but he makes his way to his manager and insists he gets him a particular girl in the front row that he had been eyeballing all night.
I’m thinking this is to get us a bit hot under the collar at his behavior. It doesn’t exactly work because we can tell right away that he’s isn’t like a sailor; isn’t ‘a girl in every port’ kind of guy. The girl he sees reminds him of Josie, for whom he has been unable to forget, though he had definitely left her behind to ache… alone. It’s obvious in some of the following scenes that he has never really tried to rid his memory of her and that outside of casual sex, thinking of her is his only real connection to anyone.

Liam learns that his best friend from High School is killed in a car accident and he takes off for home, leaving behind an already scheduled tour and stunned manager and publicist losing his mind.
Here, the narrative gets a little confusing because he has become incredibly successful, which takes a lot of discipline and when he goes back home, it’s implied or downright said buy his father, Pastor Brian (Hickey) that he had gotten into drugs and was a bit of a mess. That perplexity notwithstanding, it’s a good build up, even though you do see what’s coming. Though the story wants you to be really irritated with his character, you do like him and you hope that while he’s in town to go to his friends funeral, that he’ll run into Josie.
So, he runs into Josie and he tries to apologize for his behavior. He tells her that he knows he had put his wants and desires before hers. He wants her to believe him when he says he realizes that you can, basically, have your cake and eat it, too.

Happy to see she’s had success as well, he goes to the flower shop that she owns, to ask her out. She shows him something else that his selfishness caused him to miss out on when he left. She introduces him to her daughter, Billy (Fortson). She was named after Liam’s mother. Seeing her and hearing her name, he immediately knows what he could never replace and what he missed… the birth of his daughter and being there for her and watching her grow up. Billy is smart, cute and nothing gets by her, much like the actress who played her.
Liam begs to be a part of her life and must now prove he is worthy to be in it. A scene where Billy complains about riding in his convertible is simply priceless. She doesn’t make jumping into fatherhood easy on him but they get used to one another and she warms up to him rather quickly. When he buys her a guitar, they bond over music and suddenly you can just imagine where a sequel could go.

Forever My Girl follows the pattern of formulaic scripts that have come before it. It’s a, ‘boy leaves girl at altar to seek fame and fortune but his roots in the town and in family are buried deep and can’t be pulled out quite so easily’ story. But at its core, it’s loving and it has a good message of forgiveness. It works. It has a slow-motion, playful montage scene to complete the look but it gives us something that many films of the genre do not; a strong leading male character who’s sensitive and willing to admit he’s wrong and give up everything for his true love… loves.

 BURBANK, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2017) – The soundtrack from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 21-minute featurette “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” will be released by Walt Disney Records on Nov. 3, 2017, ahead of the featurette, which opens in front of Disney•Pixar’s original feature “Coco” in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2017. “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” introduces four all-new original songs written by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson (“Between the Lines”), and a score by Christophe Beck, who was behind the score for 2013’s Oscar®-winning feature “Frozen.”

The featurette welcomes back to the big screen the celebrated cast and characters from “Frozen,” including Josh Gad as unforgettable snowman Olaf, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Kristen Bell as Anna, and Jonathan Groff as Kristoff. Emmy®-winning filmmakers Stevie Wermers-Skelton and Kevin Deters said that the music helped shape the story in unexpected ways. “Music has always been a hallmark of Disney Animation, especially the world of ‘Frozen,’” said Deters. “So we’re thrilled to include four new songs to help tell our story.”

“Kate and Elyssa have such a sense of fun and enthusiasm,” added Wermers-Skelton. “The songs really capture the spirit of Olaf and his holiday endeavor.”

Brad’s Status Movie Review

Meet Brad.  He’s smart, he’s a good husband and father, he’s a philanthropist but, largely, he’s average.   Well, to himself, he’s average and at this point in his life that’s the worst thing he could be.  Brad (Stiller) is a guy who has found middle age an impossibly uncomfortable place to be.  With his son Troy (Abrams) about to go to college, he recalls what he was like at that age and thinks about all the things he wanted, the opportunities he had and what he did with those opportunities.  He has spent most of his adult life comparing himself to the friends he went to college with.  This hasn’t helped his self-esteem because most of them are successful, even famous in some circles.

Throughout the film, Brad tells us, through voice-overs, that he doesn’t like himself.  His inner thoughts, when he has a conversation with someone, is generally how awful a person he believes himself to be.  Since college, all his best friends have done well for themselves so, ‘what’s to like about me?’  Watching his son advance in life to the point of starting his college days, he worries Troy could turn out like him.  Another fear is, how will he feel if Troy turns out better?  What if he has all the success Brad only dreamed of?

Brad owns and operates a non-profit and though he lives in a nice home and all his needs are met, he believes his life’s work to be, in his words, ‘Absurd.’  He can’t see through all of his jealousy and his need to have more, be more. 

He continually focuses on his station or status in life, judging whether being wealthy or not speaks to what quality of a person you are.  He wonders how life would be if he were rich like his old friends, who live life as if it was a giant playground while he walks the earth with bills to worry about, finding his ground more in the battle variety. 

Where did it go wrong, he asks himself?  The voice-over is there to stay but don’t fret, it works correctly to advance the story.  He and Troy take a trip to Boston to visit some universities.  Troy misses the interview with Harvard and Brad calls on a powerful and influential friend, Craig, played by Michael Sheen. Craig comes through for him, beautifully and gets Troy in to speak with the dean.  This moment is big for this young musical prodigy and he’s proud of his father. 

There are several touching moments in the film between father and son.  Regarding the actual music in the film, it’s completely theatric and necessary.  During Brad’s inner dialogue, generally, the scene is accompanied by a single hopping bow across the bridge of a violin.  The sound emanating from the instruments F-Holes directed the mood Brad was in and highlighted the black cloud hanging over his head.  Every note heard fits into the scene perfectly; the film wouldn’t have been as good without it. 

Troy and Brad have dinner with a friend of Troy’s who already attends Harvard and within her, Brad sees the drive and the idealistic intentions he once had.  This was the turning point of the film where he tries to explain to her that wanting to help will not be appreciated and that instead, her efforts will go unnoticed and she’ll be forgotten about.  This conversation with her awakens him because through her judging eyes and her voice he hears and sees his own, or at least who he once was and would rather be again instead of this bitter man he has become.  He has a nice life, doesn’t struggle, but always wants more.  When will enough be enough? 

He hears of the passing of a favorite professor which hits him hard.  It’s this loss where Brad puts things more into perspective.  Family.  Love.  Time.  Those things are important.  His son, who doesn’t see him as a failure is who matters, not old friends that don’t call and who, as it turns out, aren’t exactly who he thought they were, after all.  Brad is alive.  Time to be alive and live for himself, not for any of them.

Again, the music throughout every scene is spectacular.  Though the character of Brad is depressing you a fair amount of the time, Ben does well with him, carrying the heavy load, so to speak.  Brad will frustrate at times and will move you to tears the next.  The best part is that at no time during this movie will you see a character like Derek Zoolander come through Stiller’s performance.  This is some of the best work I recall seeing from him.  Abrams’ portrayal of Troy is competent.  He has a real grasp of the character and is the perfect complement to Stiller’s Brad.  When Brad was at his most erratic, Abram watched his co-star and went completely in the opposite direction which thoroughly balanced the movie.
