Eternals Movie Review

“Eternals” makes a splash on the big screen, with a world-class director and the densest storyline since “Endgame”. However, with the potential to make a tidal wave, this movie struggles to make it to high tide. All the multitude of characters and the story stretched out over 7,000 years just makes for a muddled mixture of awe and flaw. The subtle introduction of very diverse characters does not count for much, if you wind up not caring for them.

Antlers Movie Review

“Antlers” is a horror movie that turns the darkness up to eleven. The dark atmosphere and the dark mood are finely tuned, to give it a really off-kilter feeling. The characters are beset by a supernatural presence that they cannot contain. The bigger picture of Lower Class troubles and Native People issues are mentioned, but not explored. The main dilemma is the monster in the midst of this small Oregon town. And it is ready to kill to get its way…

Last Night in Soho Movie Review

“Last Night in Soho” is a psychological thriller movie about the mysterious link between a present day fashion college student and a blond bombshell cabaret singer from the late 1960’s. It is set in London, in the Soho District. This is where art and music and clubs mingle in a delicious stew of hedonistic wonder. The art student connects with, and begins to emulate, her decades-in-the-past muse. But if the narrator is unreliable from the beginning, can you really know what is going on?

Halloween Kills Movie Review

“Halloween Kills” is a direct sequel to “Halloween” (2018). This is not to be confused with “Halloween” (1978), because “Halloween” (2018) is a direct follow-up to the 1978 movie. In this new timeline, all the other ‘Halloween’ sequels and follow-up movies did not happen. Now it’s only the 1978 slasher/killer and the babysitter forty years later. In 2018, the slashing and killing started again. So now the stage is set and the knives are sharpened for “Halloween Kills”.

The Last Duel Movie Review

“The Last Duel” is an epic-sized historical drama full of swords and shields and mud and blood. It tells of a true tale from the 14th century in Medieval France based on power, pride, purity and lust. The style is focused some particular events and retold multiple times from the eyes of the three main characters. This never comes off a gimmick, but instead opens up a new layer of discovery after each tale is told once more. “Madres” is a Blumhouse Television movie that deals with mothers (madres), but with a twist of fear and uncertainty. Mothers, and mothers-to-be, are placed into a deadly place – a place where a curse might be leading to death. When the little farming community in rural California has mostly Mexican immigrants, the women are afraid to become pregnant. There is something in the water, or something in the evil intentions of certain people in the town.

“Black as Night” is a movie that comes from Blumhouse Television, and it usually means a low budget and a high concept. Sometimes, the low budget can be low quality. But in this case, the idea and setting mingle to make a nice updated version of “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”. But this movie is set in the rundown areas of New Orleans, well after Katrina. So the mix between horror and social commentary becomes unavoidable. So this Amazon Original movie raises the ‘stakes’ for quality entertainment.
