What They Had Movie Review

“What They Had” is heart-tugging and lovely look at love. Or, perhaps, even more importantly – a study in commitment. When the older parents of two siblings have some health issues, do the kids have the right to tell the parents that they need to move into separate long-term care facilities? These parents are nothing if not committed to staying together, so it could be an uphill climb. The couple has been in this Chicago condo for ages, and they have no intention of leaving. Even if the wife is having memory problems, and she thinks she needs to trek in the middle of the night in a snowstorm, so she can get back to her ‘home’. Even if the husband is still having heart issues…

The couple in question is Burt (Robert Forster) and Ruth (Blythe Danner) who live the warm and cozy condo in a Chicago suburb. Burt has had a heart attack, or two, in the past couple of years. But he is feeling fine now. His wife of many years is Ruth, and she is starting to suffer from Alzheimer’s. One night, on Christmas Eve, Ruth puts on a light jacket and some slippers. Then she goes outside to walk from her house to her ‘home’ where she lived as a child. Burt gets very worried and calls his son Nicky (Michael Shannon). Ruth is located, and it brought to the hospital. Nicky calls his sister Bridget (Hilary Swank). Bridget and her daughter Emma (Taissa Farmiga) leave to go back to Chicago.

Nicky pleads with Bridget to convince their Dad to get into Ruth into a memory-care facility. It would be a safe place for her to be, and Burt can live at the assisted care place on the same campus. Burt will have none of that! He married Ruth to be there by her side, sickness and health, that type of thing – and he takes it all very seriously. He will not permit her to be anywhere but at their warm and cozy condo. She will remain right by his side, because – he made a commitment. So, there is an impasse. Nicky goes back his bar that he owns, and Bridget and Emma are not able to change Burt’s mind.

Besides, Bridget is having marital issues with her husband Eddie (Josh Lucas). She feels that she married him just to get her dad’s approval. Emma is in college, and she is not she wants to continue. But these problems will be minor if Ruth one day gets loose and gets lost somewhere in Chicago. That does appear to be a potential problem, as her Alzheimer’s continues to get worse. She can identify her kids correctly, be she calls Burt her ‘boyfriend’. Nicky thinks that the only way to get their Mom and Dad safe again is to get them out of that condo. Burt and Ruth are ready to get on with their lives. They do not want to be apart, but Burt thinks that maybe that will be a safer way to care for Ruth. But there are even more medical issues ahead, for both of them…

“What They Had” is a movie that can strike close to home, especially if you have any parents who are getting up in age. The medical conditions that can afflict older people can also affect their immediate family. This movie shows that is the case, and does it in a very straight-forward fashion. It does not sugar-coat it, and it does not take an easy way out. Of course none of this would matter without the right actors.

That is exactly what makes this movie so good. Robert Forster and Blythe Danner are paired up and they are amazing as the older couple. They fit the roles just perfectly. Hilary Swank is also very good. But Michael Shannon is superb in another emotionally heavy role – the type that seems to excel in being cast to play. The writing gives all of them a lot of very great conversations (as opposed to just plain dialog).

The House with a Clock in its Walls Movie Review

Eli Roth, known for making horror films that leave nightmares in their wake, this time tries his hand at something for the younger crowd with, ‘The House With a Clock in its Walls,’ based on the novel by John Bellairs. While this is a family movie, it does have a touch of darkness I wasn’t quite expecting to see. With its creepy puppets and dolls, the frightening CG creatures, some nice some not so nice, and the house itself which appears to be alive and often crabby, the film just might not be right for someone under the age of eight. This would especially be the case if a child has never been exposed to anything similar to Goosebumps. Magic swirls around the story and the world a young boy, Lewis (Vaccaro), who finds himself forced to live with his kooky uncle in Michigan after the death of his parents from a car accident.

Lewis is still upset about his loss but immediately warms to the idea of living with his eccentric uncle Jonathan (Black) after getting to know him more. He’s helped by getting to know his uncle’s friend and neighbor, Florence (Blanchett), and he begins to see that through them he might eventually be part of a family once more. Jonathan and Florence’s relationship is much like that of a married couple. They bicker and argue but also care about one another and seem to have Lewis’ best interest in mind as they introduce him to the life of witches and warlocks. They give him some books and he quickly learns spells of his own. At school, he’s told by his friend, Tarby (Suljic), that his uncles’ house is haunted. Lewis believes it at first due to the strange noises and loud ticking clocks but is shown that the rumor is far from the truth. Wanting to impress his friend, Lewis gets himself into trouble when he decides to prove to Tarby that he’s wrong by showing him some of the magic he’s learned. Not easily able to impress the boy, Lewis goes further. He opens a forbidden cabinet and offers a blood oath to a book on necromancy that he finds which raises from the dead the previous owner of the house, Isaac Izzard (MacLachlan). Isaac has been waiting for someone to bring him back to life so he could wipe all people from existence.

‘The House With a Clock in its Walls’ is solid entertainment. The CGI is well done, Blanchett is dramatic and comical, Jack Black’s crazy warlock is impressive and the barking chair that seems to be his pet will leave smiles on the faces of the young and old alike. In fact, this might be a good introduction for kids to watching something heavier. Again, this will appeal to the older kids in the family, but you might want to leave the much younger ones at home. I don’t think you want this film to be how they learn about death which is a subject well breached here. It can be scary but its intentions of teaching a boy about his spirit and about being adventurous are not missed. I can see where the studio might be able to take this trip a little further if they were so inclined.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION

‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ is very entertaining family fun with a powerful message that no one can ignore… or would even want to.

The third film in the franchise is a bit different than the others and in a positive way. Love is still in the air but we’re not in the Hotel. We are now on a cruise ship which lends the filmmakers plenty of room to offer the audience new sight gags, characters and outlandish situations. Moving from the Hotel allows for interesting and fun events for the characters to attend which works very well as the audience I saw it with went particularly crazy watching this fun animated feature. When you’re on a cruise in real life you have places you stop and get off before you reach your final destination. This happens here, as well, and each time they do or as the characters move from one area of the ship to the next, the tone, music and mood shifts and the children I was watching the movie with couldn’t have been more pleased. They were cheering. I’m betting yours will be, too.

When the movie starts, we see a nemesis of Dracula’s, named Van Helsing (Gaffigan), who, as his father and father’s father had done, chases Dracula through the years. Van Helsing never gives up his pursuit until, after watching him give chase for several minutes, he too meets his death. More about that after we see what Dracula is up to now. His daughter, Mavis (Gomez), sees him sulk about the house. He’s depressed, miserable and showing visible signs of tension and anxiety. She books him a trip on the cruise thinking he just needs to relax, never realizing he’s simply lonely. He lost his wife and wants to find love again.

You’re now all caught up.

So, off to get on a cruise they go. I have to mention that you’re going to howl at the plane ride they take getting there.

Anyway, on the ship, he meets Ericka (Hahn) who ends up being the granddaughter of the famous Vampire Hunter; not that he knows this. Her ship caters to monsters and is now filled with them. Several monsters, which are based on hysterical stereotypes of humans, are meeting and falling in love, which is what Dracula does the moment he sees her. He feels a Zing (true love) happen, which is supposed to only happen once. Is it a true Zing? He is willing to find out.

However, it doesn’t matter if he Zing’s or not. Love is not in her plans. She wants to fulfill the family legacy and do as her ancestors did. She intends to rid the planet of Dracula and, in fact, all monsters. Though she starts to grow fond of Dracula and his family, she finds the ‘Instrument of Destruction’ to destroy the population of monsters and is going to use it. When she has it, she does use it; to raise a giant monster who, when under the spell of music, goes bonkers and wipes out everything around. This explains Atlantis and The Bermuda Triangle and… ‘WAIT! She raises a monster that will take out all monsters?!’ Okay. A little weak there but it works if you don’t think too hard.

I won’t give away the rest accept to let you know that you’ll love the Fish Man that’s voiced by Chris Parnell, delight when ‘Good Vibrations,’ ‘Be Happy’ and the ‘Macarena’ are used and strongly appreciate the intentional point revealed in the film which is that you have to be ‘greater than the haters’ because… ‘we’re all the same.’ Go see ‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ with the whole family and if you haven’t seen the first two yet, check them out, too. I can’t imagine this storyline will continue much longer but they managed to keep this sequel riveting, something all of the adults will be particularly fond of.  ZING!

The Grinch – Trailer

For their eighth fully animated feature, Illumination and Universal Pictures present The Grinch, based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday classic.  The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit.  Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.

Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company.  With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Who-ville when he runs out of food.

Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations.  When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas.  To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.

Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, Cindy-Lou Who—a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer—plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother.  As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheme threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one.  Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus?  Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all?

Find out, Christmas season 2018.

A Wrinkle in Time Movie Review

This is a story of light overpowering the darkness, good overwhelming evil and love’s triumph over hate. There are some magical moments in the film but a few instances of head-scratching will occur, as well. We are taken on a journey that a young woman, Meg (Reid), must take in order to move forward with her life. Doubting love, unhappy with life and questioning her self-worth most of all, the sweet and happy-go-lucky little girl of the past has lived the last four years in misery and prefers keeping to herself, the only person she can trust. She knows her little brother, the highly intelligent and gifted Charles Wallace, played by an adorable and very into the part, Deric McCabe, loves her. If she’s to believe in love, however, why did her father leave her if he loved her as much as she loved him? The central question eating away at Meg is if he could just walk away, so could anyone else so why get attached?

Its been four years since she last saw her father, Mr. Murry (Pine), a brilliant Nasa scientist who believed you could fold time and move through it. Alone one night, he simply disappeared without a trace. At the time, he and her mother were working on a theory of projecting oneself through the universe with one’s mind. They introduced this idea to a group of scientists who weren’t ready to hear such a thing, not ready to hear that there were no rules to space and time. Her mother, played elegantly by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, a physicist and the more prudent of the two, knew telling them too early about the act of ‘Tessering’, moving from one place to another by closing your eyes, opening your mind and finding the right rhythm or frequency to travel, would not be taken seriously but her husband told them anyway only to be rejected. Not including her in another decision, he works in their lab and vanishes. Unsure if he left because he doesn’t love them anymore, the family is devastated and all work in science is halted… or so they thought. Young Charles Wallace has a secret to share with his big sister and the timing couldn’t be better.

He has been in contact with three divine, ethereal beings, referred to as the Mrs. as their names are (in order of appearance), Mrs. Whatsit (Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Kaling) and the blessed, more powerful, Mrs. Which (Winfrey). They’re colorful, otherworldly souls who are aware of Mr. and Mrs. Murry and their achievements. They inform Meg, Charles Wallace and their friend Calvin (Miller) that they have heard a call from Mr. Murry and that they intend to help the children find him. They also tell them that he may be in danger. The spirits teach a very stubborn Meg that she needs to believe and to open her heart to find the right pitch in order to leap or Tesser into another dimension. She’s suspicious but joins the group to find herself on another plain in the universe. At a later moment, Mrs. Which explains that to Meg that a lot went into making her and that she’s a part of this giant universe, too. She deserves love… is love.

Zach Galifianakis, who gives a wonderful and somewhat stirring performance as Happy Medium (a fun play on words), a seer who helps point them in the direction their father can be found, tries to break through the wall Meg has surrounded herself with. It’s at this point that they all agree they need to show Meg what’s at stake. The It, which is the darkest mind in the universe, that can reach any and everywhere, even earth, wants to bring pain, despair and darkness to the universe and is where their father is trapped. They must save him, and but the Mrs. can go no further. The children are given a few gifts to help them and are sent out on their own. Once they are on their own, the movie has visual delights that will fascinate and amuse all who watch, especially the youngest in the audience. Structures begin to move and change which is interesting. There are some creepy moments and surreal moments, all done exceptionally well. Michael Peňa makes his appearance in a scene you wish you could rewind to watch again, and before he’s gone, he grabs Charles Wallace and infects him with the evil energy. The actor playing Charles Wallace is wonderful here, portraying a loving child one moment and conjuring a demon the next. He tries to get Meg to join him but she fights for their lives against the darkness; fights for them all. Megs final Tesser is glorious and you’ll know what I mean by that when you experience it yourself.

The film is good. This will be the family movie of the year. Youngsters will have a wonderful time watching it and so will you. Forget about Madeline L’Engle’s fantasy novel, just enjoy the film. I had a few problems with how director DuVernay didn’t set up the connection with Meg and her father enough for the audience to truly feel the love and bond between and scene with them toward the end which makes him look like a complete coward and turns you against him. That doesn’t make sense but overall, she did an exceptional job directing these young actors and bringing this beautiful story to the screen. The score and the soundtrack are fantastic, as well. See this at the theatre to experience it all the ways it should be.

Burbank, Calif. — Feb. 20, 2018 – Walt Disney Records is set to release the digital version of the original motion picture soundtrack to Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” from visionary director Ava DuVernay on March 9th as the film opens in theaters nationwide.

The soundtrack was produced by DuVernay and features the end-credit song “I Believe” performed by Grammy® nominated and multi-platinum selling artists DJ Khaled featuring Demi Lovato.   The song was written by Khaled, Lovato, Denisia “Blu June” Andrews and Brittany “Chi” Coney and was produced by Khaled.  Both artists are embarking on a 20-date North American tour beginning February 26 in San Diego, CA.

The soundtrack also includes two versions of “Flower of the Universe” performed by Sade, one of which is a remix by No I.D.  The multi-Grammy winning and multi-platinum selling artist also co-wrote and co-produced the track with Ben Travers and Andrew Hale. This is Sade’s second original song contribution to a soundtrack following 1986’s “Absolute Beginners.”

Five-time Grammy nominee singer-songwriter Sia performs “Magic,” a song she also co-wrote with Grammy-nominated producer-songwriter Jesse Shatkin.  Shatkin also produced the track.

Grammy-nominated artist Kehlani performs “Let Me Live.”  Kehlani released her debut chart-topping album, SweetSexySavage last year and will also be touring North America with Lovato and Khaled.

Also included is “Warrior,” written and performed by sisters Chloe x Halle.  The duo made a cameo in Beyonce’s Lemonade visual album and were subsequently invited to join as the opening act on The Formation World Tour.  The sisters released their debut EP, Sugar Symphony, in 2016 and are currently series regulars on Freeform’s “Grown-ish.”

The “A Wrinkle in Time” score is composed, conducted and produced by Ramin Djawadi.  The German-born composer has scored over 100 projects including blockbuster films such as “Pacific Rim,” “Iron Man” and “Clash of the Titans” and celebrated television scores including “Game of Thrones,” “Westworld,” “Prison Break” and “The Strain.”

The Grammy and Emmy®-nominated composer recorded the score in Los Angeles with a 71-piece orchestra and a 29-person choir, as well as a 24-member children’s choir.

Speaking of the artists and composer, DuVernay said: “Each song on the ‘Wrinkle in Time’ soundtrack was crafted with great care in close collaboration with the artists. My creative partnership with Sade on ‘Flower of the Universe’ was so connected that I reverse engineered the usual process and used her lyrics as actual dialogue within the film. I truly loved working with DJ Khaled who jumped into this project with open arms and an open heart, along with the great Demi Lovato. Sia, Kehlani and Chloe x Halle beautifully embraced the visuals of the film to create distinct songs that expand and elevate Meg’s heroic journey. And working with Ramin Djawadi was a dream come true as I have been a long-time admirer of his stellar work. His musical compositions for the film are perfectly otherworldly.”
