This is a profound film. It’s ingenious. There are so many clever, emotional, and heartfelt scenes. If you like Pixar’s thought-provoking movies, this one is for you.
It’s deeper and more insightful than you’d expect it to be. Don’t worry, the kids will love it as much as you. Of course they will, it’s Disney/Pixar! They know what they’re doing for the whole family, and you’ll be impressed in every way possible with what they have for you with “Hoppers.”
The very empathetic, nineteen-year-old Mable (one of the best protagonists to come along in a long time), voiced by Piper Curda, puts on a helmet, goes into a beaver’s body, and sees what life is like from his point of view. The reason she does this is in the setup. She and her grandmother used to sit on a rock near the river and just “listen.” Be still, watch, and listen to nature. It was a beautiful thing that the two shared together.
Now, she finds herself in a situation where she must try and save the woods that she and her grandmother loved so much. At such a young age, she finds herself having to keep the ecological balance alive, meaning to meet the needs of both humans and the ecosystem without killing either. She does her part. She picks up trash, and now she works hard at getting people to sign a petition to save the glade that meant so much to her and her grandmother. It’s a scary position to be in, especially when you’re in someone’s way, and they don’t want you there. Yes. There’s a bit of adventure. You knew it wouldn’t be easy for her.
She has 48hours before they pour concrete, killing the entire area and everything in its path. It’s best that you bring a tissue, just in case, because there are truly emotional moments. That said, there is a great deal of humor as well. I was cracking up, as were many others. It had a seamless flow, never once giving you a reason to wish it would, “end already.” Jon Hamm plays Mayor Jerry Generazzo, or “the bad guy,” who is out to tear everything down. To the animals, he is the human king. All species have a king (or a queen) who rules. The animals are terrific, and you’ll love and remember them all.
This movie has a great message, an important message, and it’s sent to you by way of a high-octane script, impeccable directing, and impactful editing. It did get a bit dark a few times, but it was necessary. I so want to give something away, but I won’t. Allow me to say this: Pay attention to the insect queen, a monarch butterfly, played by Meryl Streep. There’s something that has to do with her that made me about fall out of my chair. Run to see this at your local theater; it’s not a perfect animated film, but it’s about as close as it gets.
