We start in a small town, with a big heart, of course, called Willowbrook. It’s in the center of Kansas. Kansas is brought up for a reason here as it comes into play again at the end of the film in a very creative way.
Speaking of which, there is an end-credits scene worth seeing if you liked what you saw throughout the movie enough to make it through the whole thing. In the beginning, you meet Gail (Deutch) and her fiancé, Tom (Michael Cassidy), and they’re both asked: if they could sleep with any star without the other being angry, they’re “given a free pass,” who would it be? That’s what the movie is about, these two answering this question and trying to perform the task. You won’t miss what the movie is about as it’s repeated. You don’t need it repeated to you, but it is.
Tom ends up meeting his celebrity crush, star Jennifer Aniston, whom Gail also meets. She likes her but didn’t like the idea that Tom got with her. Since he did, she must do the same and get with her pass, Jon Hamm, or her relationship with Tom will be over. Most of the movie is trying to run Hamm down. She and Otto, a man Gail works with at a salon, are going to L.A. to a salon conference and to get themselves into trouble. They meet up with John Slattery, playing himself, and he offers his assistance in Gail’s quest because he knows Hamm so well. A lot of Slattery’s dialogue is absurd.
The first half of the film isn’t as good as the last half, which saved it for me, but overall, with this cast, I was disappointed by what it ended up being. The script needed tweaking and tightening, which is surprising because of who inked the story. There are several cameos that don’t really work, and it’s with them that the storyline tries to use gags that go on and on, destroying what credibility the movie had. It just doesn’t work as a whole. I wanted to like this more. It was just too ridiculous. It isn’t until Hamm joins up with the team that it becomes palatable, and he isn’t in it very long at all. That said, at the end, there’s a Wizard of Oz thing going on, which did help how I felt about it overall. I think it will for you, too.
