“You People” is a movie about a crash and clash of competing cultures. There is a young White Jewish guy who happens to meet a very nice Black Muslim lady. There is no reason that their relationship shouldn’t blossom and bloom into marriage, right? No reason, except they both have families who are not happy with that idea. The differences are as stark as day and night — or better said — Black and White.
“Missing” is a movie that is from the same people that created “Searching”. That movie used the concept that everything you see on the big screen is from a small screen. That means everything seen is footage from computer screens, phone screens, and other devices – you get the idea. The original “Searching” did a terrific job in making all of that seem real. Now “Missing” follows in those same footsteps to slowly explain a mysterious disappearance and one girl’s relentless ‘searching’ for the truth.
“The Son” is a prequel to a movie called “The Father” by the same Writer and Director. It has a difficult balance to work out – how to make a movie about a young person dealing with clinical depression, but not make a movie that is depressing. It is a rough road to travel. But the performances are almost enough to deliver that balance. However, the manipulative script undercuts the final results. Read more

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is a close second-cousin to the movie “Knives Out”. They are related by blood, mainly the blood oozing from deadly flesh wounds. “Knives Out” concerned a suspected murder, and all of the mysterious events and cover-ups that occurred after. “Glass Onion” is also a whodunnit, in a sense. But when it becomes unclear exactly what has been done, then very next mystery is exactly who.
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” is a detailed look at the life of singer Whitney Houston. She was a phenomenal performer and a gifted artist. She had a powerful influence on pop music and on society in general. While some Blacks chided her for sounding too ‘White’, she continued to rack up Number One hits. “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is an animated movie for anyone who has a spirit of adventure, and a dash of ‘Shrek’ nostalgia. The big green ogre is nowhere to be seen, but one of his faithful companions is ‘Puss in Boots’, who continues his own story of fearless heroism. “Spoiler Alert” is a love story for this modern age. I mean it carries over from the 1970 movie “Love Story”, starring Ryan O’Neal and Ali McGraw. That is the one about star-crossed lovers who fall for each other and then one of them succumbs to a fatal disease. The story that says “love means never having to say you’re sorry”. This new movie is a true-life version, but with two gay man as the lovers. Read more
“I am DB Cooper” is a documentary about DB Cooper, the only unsolved case of a skyjacking in US history. The events of November 1971 have been painstakingly researched by the FBI and local police. There was no trace of a passenger called ‘Dan Cooper’ after he had gotten ransom money and a parachute. The man disappeared off the plane over the Columbia River in Washington. “2nd Chance” is a look at a guy who shot himself 192 times. But he had a good reason, I guess. His purpose was to test out a very advanced bullet-proof vest. He created a company that became legendary for the way that it protected police officers and saved lives. But, there were some speed bumps on his journey. Many of them were self-inflicted. “A Piece of Sky” shows that Switzerland is not just for travelogues and documentaries. This is a slow-moving drama about life in a small village in the Swiss Alps. The movie is one that might be considered for a Foreign Film nomination at the Academy Awards. At the Berlin Film Festival 2022, this received ‘special mention’. The sad story is told at a meandering pace, and it never quite leaves the valleys far below the peaks. Read more
