A Complete Unknown Movie Review

I didn’t really know what to expect from “A Complete Unknown.” I don’t know a lot about Dylan so who was I to say whether a portrayal of his was well done or not? However, I’ll admit that enjoying the film and its cast doesn’t take knowing who Bob Dylan was. ​

As with any movie of this ilk, you catch on and you, “get it.” Honestly, I feel I know him now, and it just may be one of my favorite music biographies. It gives so much asking so little of the audience. When I first heard of the over two hours it would take to watch this, I was extremely nervous, but coming out of it, I wondered where the time went and wanted more! More, I tell you. I never wanted it to end. Yes. That’s how well done this James Mangold (“Walk the Line,” “Logan”) film is.  

The opening gets you to know Dylan through the company he kept. Edward Norton (“American History X”) plays Pete Seeger who sings Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” we all know it, but was considered controversial at the time. Think about that! Politically, the country was torn apart at the time and a song like that, which should have brought us together, was unwelcome. Woody Guthrie is in the hospital. Seeger, taking an interest in young Dylan, takes him along to go see him. Dylan enjoys the ride.

“This Machine Kills Fascists.” Look for that.

How things in their lives fall, politics at the time, the musicians that are mentioned, make this a tremendously, fascinating watch. Not only are you getting to know them, but you’re also finding out how big steps in their lives and in this nations, played out. It’s music, their music, that got people through significant moments in this land we call home. Lines such as, “You’re pushing candles, he’s selling light bulbs” is a reason to put this on your Christmas list and still another, Timothée Chalamet will blow you away. The writing, directing and this cast make this must-see. It’s one of the best films we’re given this year. Monica Barbaro, from “Top Gun: Maverick,” is incredible as Joan Baez. Pay close attention to her so it isn’t lost in all the wonder you get from the film. I say this almost in jest because you couldn’t possibly forget her performance or the storyline that accompanies her presentation of the folk singer. Another thing, if you didn’t think you were a big fan of folk music, think again.
