Spotlight
TORONTO, ON – A24 world premiered their raucous, R-rated musical comedy DICKS: THE MUSICAL to a packed house at the Toronto International Film Festival that culminated in a flash mob-style choir performance of the the original song “All Love is Love.” Actors Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, who also wrote the screenplay and lyrics for the film, were in attendance alongside Bowen Yang and their puppet co-stars “The Sewer Boys.”
During the film’s final irreverent musical number, 17 choir members from Forte – Toronto Gay Men’s Chorus, dressed in colorful robes and led the audience in singing and clapping along to “All Love is Love,” as balloons and NSFW inflatables rained down from the balcony.
Sharp and Jackson set the tone for the evening by pumping up the crowd with a rowdy introduction that included them reading prepared remarks from director and comedy legend Larry Charles, who could not be in attendance at the premiere. “Welcome to the most anti-AI, pro-human movie of the 21st century!” Charles boldly declared.
In a post-film Q&A moderated by TIFF Midnight Madness Programmer Peter Kuplowsky, Sharp and Jackson spoke about how the stage show’s origins trace back to the former home of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre – the iconic basement of a Gristedes’ supermarket in New York City. They also spoke at length about what Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Megan Thee Stallion brought to the project in their roles, as well as Charles, who challenged everyone to push the limits of the visual and written humor in this truly unique musical.
