Movie Trends in 2019

As opposed to a ‘2019 Best of’ (or even a ‘2019 Worst of’) listing – these are some thoughts about the ongoing trends in movies. Some of these are positive, but there are quite a few that are not!

Question: For all the top content that is being created in 2019, how much of it is controlled by a single studio?

Of the Top Ten Box Office draws – 7 were from Walt Disney

Question: How many pictures are being created based on previously known concepts? Where is all the original content?

Based on the Box Office Top 25 Box Office results, the ‘original concept’ movie is not found until #12 (“Us”), #18 (“Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood”), #21 (“Knives Out”).

Independently Minded:

Independent movie production is always difficult at best. With many Production companies being eliminated or swallowed up by big studios in recent years – it is hard to get a grasp on original material that is not driven by big studio focus groups and back-room deals…

Good Examples: “They Shall Not Grow Old”, “The Last Black Man in San Francisco”, “Maiden”, โ€œThe Farewell”, “The Peanut Butter Falcon”, โ€œParasiteโ€

Bad Examples: “The Souvenir”, “Waves”

Recycles, Retreads, Reboots:

The majority of Hollywood product is somehow created in a complete creative vacuum. Where there is a lack of new ideas, the only idea is to do the same thing again. That is the reason for so many movies that come from recycled ideas, retreads of old concepts, and reboots that nobody asked for.

Good Examples: uhh, let me think about that…. maybe “The Addams Family”

Bad Examples: “Hellboy”, “A Dog’s Journey”, “Aladdin”, “Dark Phoenix”, “Shaft”, “Men In Black: International”, “The Lion King”, “Fast and Furious Presents – Hobbs and Shaw”, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”, “Terminator – Dark Fate”, “Charlie’s Angels”

Sequels:

When you are on the right track, you want to race around one more time, right? So, there are some reasons that sequels are popular and they create Box Office revenue. Of the Top 15 Box Office draws – 8 were sequels of previous movies…

Good Examples: “How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World”, “Avengers: Endgame”, “John Wick 3: Parabellum”, “The Secret Life of Pets 2”, “Spiderman: Far From Home”, “Zombieland: Double Tap”, “Frozen 2”, “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker”, “Jumanji: The Next Level”

Bad Examples: “The Angry Birds Movie 2”, “Angel Has Fallen”, “Annabelle Comes Home”

Length of Time in Theaters:

Most movies that were produced by Amazon or Netflix tend to have a very short amount of time actually having any theatrical release time. There is not much time available to see many of these movies on the big silver screen…

Short Time Examples: “Triple Frontier”, “The Aeronauts”, “The Two Popes”, “The Laundromat”, “The Irishman”, “The King”, “Marriage Story”

Movie Length:

Most of the time, movies are a decent length to tell a great story. They get you in and out of a theater quickly. Quite a few are around 90 to 100 minutes. But when some big movies are so stuffed with content that it takes longer than two hours – your bladder could be getting a workout. Here are a few that might have made you squirm due to the length…

Length – 142 minutes (2 hours and 21 minutes)ย  โ€œStar Wars: Rise of Skywalkerโ€

Length – 144 minutes (2 hours and 24 minutes)ย  โ€œMotherless Brooklynโ€

Length – 149 minutes (2 hours and 29 minutes)ย  โ€œThe Goldfinchโ€

Length – 152 minutes (2 hours and 31 minutes)ย  โ€œFord v Ferrariโ€

Length – 161 minutes (2 hours and 40 minutes)ย  โ€œOnce Upon a Timeโ€ฆ in Hollywoodโ€

Length – 169 minutes (2 hours and 48 minutes)ย  โ€œIT: Chapter 2โ€

Length – 181 minutes (3 hours and 6 minutes)ย  โ€œAvengers: Endgameโ€

Length – 209 minutes (3 hours and 28 minutes)ย  โ€œThe Irishmanโ€

Movies Directed by Women:

Lulu Wang – “The Farewell”

Lorene Scafaria – “Hustlers”

Melina Matsoukas – “Queen & Slim”

Greta Gerwig – “Little Women”

Kasi Lemmons – “Harriet”

Tina Gordon – “Little”

Jill Culton – “Abominable”

Jennifer Lee – “Frozen 2” (co-director)

Marielle Heller – “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”

Elizebeth Banks – “Charlie’s Angels”

These are a couple of the Trends that I noticed in 2019. But that does not make this year all that much different from most other years. It is does not substitute for a โ€œBest Ofโ€ type of listing. But I thought it would be nice to list out more categories that include more films.

I think movies need to be shared and enjoyed by as many people as possible! Going to a movie theater is a group experience, even if you go in there alone. When the lights go dark and movie begins, you can participate in a special kind of magic. You can be entertained, or enlightened. But you are never bored. Or at least, let's hope not. Try reading the reviews first.. maybe that will help!

What's your take?
