I’ll be honest. You may not love this film as much as the first Guardians. That’s a tough one to beat. The first one had a killer soundtrack. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has an excellent soundtrack, but the music in the first one was exceptional.
See this at a comfy theater. It’s two and a half hours long, but you won’t get bed sores and it isn’t tiring. Rocket (Bradley Cooper) is listening to Radiohead’s “Creep,” which starts things off and sets the tone.
But, I’m sure you didn’t come here to see if the music held up to the first two of the trilogy.
The cast was great, and since I tried to go in not knowing much about the movie, I was surprised to find out that this movie is mainly about Rocket’s backstory. Throughout most of the film, the poor little guy spends his time hooked up to tubes and an oxygen mask. It is finally revealed to him, something we knew all along, that he is a raccoon. How this comes about is very emotional and heartbreaking. There is a lot of focus on animals, so if you’re an animal lover, bring some tissue.
The reason for a host of the sinister things going on in the film is a man named The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), who’s a bit delusional, believing he is equal to the all-mighty. He’s a scientist who is doing everything he can to create the perfect society… his exclusive alternative to Earth, “Counter-Earth.” And he’s about as ungodly as they come, but that’s not how he sees his purpose. He wants to perfect what exists… and Rocket is essential to achieving his goals.
We are also introduced to a character named Adam Warlock. He’s played by “We’re the Miller’s” Will Poulter. His character is nasty at first. He’s strong, Herculean, nearly indestructible. He has one significant chink in his armor. He puts off an air of weakness. He’s a bit of a sissy who must do his Mama’s bidding. His mother is the Golden High Priestess, the sovereign queen played by Elizabeth Debicki. She is in some trouble and sends Warlock to kill the Guardians. Warlock is powerful and not very kind, but then he seems to grow up before our eyes.
However, what would have been nice is if Gunn had wrapped up by the time the movie was over, whether he is a big boy and on the right side, fighting with the good guys, or whether he’ll be a villain like his Mama would like for him to be. From what I see, I’m going with he’s a hero! A darling little animal falls in love with him the moment they meet. No villain would care for an animal this adorable. Anyway, with these additions, one must ask, are they trying to build a series here? I guess we’ll see. Groot is growing up… he’s very cool and intuitive. You’ll like that.
Gamora (Saldana) makes an appearance and isn’t the same woman we once knew. Peter Quill (Pratt) tries to keep his broken heart and feelings intact when she doesn’t want to be with him anymore. Or for him to make her someone she isn’t. The question for you is, can he change her mind before the film’s end?
I hope you haven’t been watching or reading too many spoilers. You should find this out on your own. I would like to ask James Gunn why he made Nathan Fillion look like a flesh-colored Michelin Man. Puzzles me to pieces.
The cinematography is high-powered. A dynamic, explosive fight scene toward the end makes sitting through this worth every second. But let’s face it. These characters do that for you, anyway. I don’t know about you, but I will miss them. But this is a great ending.
*There is a middle credit scene and an end credit scene you CANNOT miss. Have fun!!
