Do Us Part Movie Review

Ryan (Travis Laughlin) is about to get married. His friend Mark, played by the writer and director of the film, Reed Arnold, who is standing up with him as his best man, and his bestie from college, Rose (Kelly Russo), show up to view the nuptials. However, she wasn’t invited. ​

She was a surprise, but a happy one to a degree. Rose came to say what she had always wanted to say, that she loved him. When she runs into and speaks with Mark, the story gets into the weeds. Arnold knows how to set up a scene, so the comedy is handled properly, but being an indie film, it was predictable with its dialogue and storyline.

I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. If you haven’t seen this type of Rom-Com before, you’ll enjoy it more than those of us who’ve seen these over and over again. Rose mentions that watching the film “When Harry Met Sally” was an inspiration for her to crash the wedding. See it, and you’ll get why. Speaking to Mark, Ryan is stiff in conversation, sounding as if he wants to be anywhere but where he is. Does he want this wedding to go on? Flashbacks reveal to you maybe not. Mark tells him that he’s not “pulling a Taylor Swift, the eponymous track on “Speak Now,” in which she crashes a wedding to steal the groom. I didn’t know what he was referring to and now need to listen to the tune. I hope I just did that to you.

Mark is demoted to regular attendee. I can’t tell you why, but what is said here is a shock. However, when you think about it, should it matter now? You be the judge. A fight ensues. The Bride-to-be isn’t unaware of why it would be happening at this moment. We’re given some sage advice not to put anyone on a pedestal. To keep it real, just remember that all people have bowel movements, same as you do. In the third act, the writing sharpens. Mark and Rose make a promise to one another, which brings the narrative full circle. It was a good way to end the story altogether. “Do Us Part” will give you some laughs, especially if you’re in need of some, but important dialogue falls flat and can be a bit too clumsy to say this is a true winner. At times, Arnold tried too hard. Making fun of a Vietnam Vet would be one of those times.
