DEADPOOL and WOLVERINE Movie Review

Director Shawn Levy, Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has delivered a blockbuster with their latest movie โ€œDeadpool & Wolverine.โ€ Youโ€™ll be laughing so much; you wonโ€™t have time to find a lot wrong with it.

It gives you everything that youโ€™d want and more. Itโ€™s, by far, my favorite of the franchise. Donโ€™t worry reading this. Iโ€™ll try to only tell you a little about what youโ€™ll get and not give anything awayโ€ฆ like the fact that cameos litter the film, some that lead to applause when unveiled.

The movie starts with an incredibly intoxicating action sequence, which Levy uses to fold his credits into. I hope youโ€™re in your seat and donโ€™t miss this. Be warned, though, the movie can be a bit unnecessarily bloody, but I didnโ€™t find it off-putting and you most likely wonโ€™t either. When Disney obtained 20th Century Studios, I never dreamed theyโ€™d allow Deadpool to be more Deadpooly than he was, but they did and it works, even when poking fun at themselves.

The acting required from Jackman in a lot of his scenes couldnโ€™t have been easy with Ryan Reynolds on the set, but he was more than convincing with a surprisingly concerned Deadpool (Reynolds) by his side, even though he refers to Wolverine as the โ€œguy with forks for hands.โ€ Right before they fight and start stabbing one another over and over, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall telling the nerds to get their special sock out because itโ€™s about to get good. Yep. It earns its R rating.

This is a hilarious script, filled also with deep emotion. Wolverine, in the original comic book, blue and yellow costume, is very expressive and troubled, blaming himself for the loss of something in his universe. I say that because a lot of the story centers around a multi-verse/time-line scenario. The plot covering a character named Mr. Paradox, played by Matthew Macfadyen from โ€œSuccession,โ€ could have been better. Not a lot of time was spent on him to fully paint the picture of why heโ€™s doing what he is.

What works the most are the filmmaking, Disney, MCU and X-Men references. Why? Theyโ€™re right on point and extremely amusing. Then thereโ€™s the main villain. Her name is Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin (The Crown). Sheโ€™s a twin and you know her male sibling very well. Try not to find this out if you can because once you see what sheโ€™s capable of, and enjoys doing to people, itโ€™s surprising to find out who he is. Sheโ€™s a heartless, cold-blooded monster, accurately performed down to the evil look in her eyes. This is a character that Iโ€™d like to see them do more with.

It is a long movie, over two hours, but what movie isnโ€™t these days? Thereโ€™s a scene where Deadpool says, โ€œAudiences are accustomed to long running times.โ€ Thatโ€™s true and I promise you there will be no watch checking due to the lengthโ€ฆ or any other reason. And you will really like the soundtrack.

One last thing, there are some fun behind the scenes shots of Marvel films from Fox, which run during the credits, and then an after-credit scene, as well. Itโ€™s worth staying for. If youโ€™re curious, this is definitely the best Marvel film in a very long time. See it on a giant screen that has suitable sound.
