The opening of “Babygirl” comes in with a bang and goes out with a whimper… so to speak.
The film begins by showing us that an incredibly high-powered and successful robotics CEO named Romy, (Nicole Kidman) isn’t who she seems to be. In the office, she carries herself one way, strong, sure of herself, above all, but in private moments, she feels the complete opposite. Feelings about herself get satiated sexually, generally she does this manually. While having sex with her husband Jacob, played by Antonio Banderas, she fakes it. Their lovemaking is less than, so she completes the task on her own. Something in her life has made her feel unattractive and not worthy. Scenes come to corroborate that. She can’t get what she wants from Jacob because he feels like a villain, dominating her submissive desires. She’s frustrated with him.
She has a chance meeting with an attractive young man named Samuel, played by Harris Dickinson from “Triangle of Sadness” and “Where the Crawdads Sing.” He ends up being of significant interest to her when she finds that he’s an intern in her tech company. Immediately and somehow, he’s aware of her sexual needs, knowing that she’s someone that wants to be controlled. She suddenly has negotiations with this man, getting her warm inside like she never has been before. This leads to play and teasing that surprises her. There is a very specific relationship between the submissive and dominate. One time actress, writer/director, Halina Reijn, uses some of the rules partners in a BDSM relationship are held to. It’s intriguing to watch their liaison build.
You hope they both understand it can go no further than play. She seems to attempt to hit that goal. As far as the office goes, they shouldn’t allow anyone to notice even a glimpse pass between the two. Easier said than done when both Romy and Samuel enjoy what their bodies are experiencing with their new partner, more than they have with anyone else before. Romy has permission to be the woman she has always hidden. Samuel gets to be seen as someone more than an intern. This movie is fiery, even tender in moments. I recommend seeing it so you can find the flashes that excite you most. The hook here in the kink, but the story and the cast will desperately arouse you. Prepare for that.
