Another Simple Favor Movie Review

Another Simple Favor can be a fun watch. If you like nothing else about it, impossible by the way, it’s worth a watch for John Schwartman’s cinematography.

He was the director of photography for the Seabiscuit and Jurassic World Dominion as well as The Amazing Spider-man. He certainly knows how to make a scene beautiful and uses locations to his full advantage.

Again, this film stars Anna Kendrick as Stephanie Smothers and Blake Lively as the glorious housewife Emily Nelson. Allison Janney and Elizabeth Perkins as Aunt Linda and Mother Margaret also appear. Their roles could have been left out, and you wouldn’t have missed them, but they do add a certain charm and humour. Suspending disbelief will be necessary to appreciate their characters when they’re on screen.

Darren is back, still played by Andrew Rannells. He’s Stephanie’s worthy friend, and though he can be a lot, I would have liked to have seen more of him. Rannells plays the role well, and I could see him working a subplot or two just as much as any other in this film.

Stephanie still has her Vlog, which is more popular than ever. She’s in a store hocking her book about what happened in the first film when suddenly, in walks Emily, wearing an outfit that’s prison chic mixed with Coco Chanel. She’s head-turning gorgeous. Emily wants Stephanie to be her maid of honor as she’s planning a wedding in Capri. She’s a changed woman, and she’s settling down. Who believes that? Not Stephanie, but her interest is piqued, for more episodes if for nothing else. Emily is marrying an Italian businessman with a mafia vibe, Dante Versano, played by Michele Morrone from Subservience. Though he’ll be her husband, Emily reminds Stephanie that crime is Stephanie’s kink.” Stephanie has proven she’s not wrong there. Let’s see what this little adventure has, shall we?

As with the first film, there are too many twists and plot changes. The main characters stay who they are, so they’re well written, but can we find an ending already? There’s a great laugh-out-loud line near the end that you can’t miss. Many try to get this “Oh shit!” to work. It does here. The movie has many comedic elements, but much of the humor goes too far. I will say that they hit the mark on the acting. The movie is entertaining. It’s enjoyable, but there’s no need to rush to watch. If you liked the first film, you will take pleasure in this one. It’s very dark, even with the comedy, but to be honest, it does get a bit ridiculous at times.
