The Day the Earth Blew Up

The Day the Earth Blew Up Movie Review

“The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” is a title that is mouthful, kinda like mouthful of gum. That is the evil Alien gum from the nasty villain of this movie. The Alien monster is planning the world’s biggest bubble of gum that covers the globe. Nobody can save the planet – except maybe a stuttering Pig and a ‘looney’ Duck.

That fantastic pair of goofballs, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig (both voiced by Eric Bauza) have a grand adventure to save their home, their city and the planet. It all starts with a huge asteroid heading straight towards Earth. There is a smart Scientist (voiced by Fred Tatasciore) who first see the threat. But he also sees a UFO.

The UFO crashes near his observatory. When he goes to check up on what happened, the worst thing happens. The UFO has dropped a large load of Alien goo. Much of this goo lands on the house where Porky and Daffy live. They have grown up with a very helpful and friendly guy — Farmer Jim (also voiced by Fred Tatasciore).

Farmer Jim had left quite a few years ago, after he raised the pair of silly friends. Daffy and Porky really miss their good friend, but now the nasty Neighborhood Inspector — Mrs. Gretch (voiced by Laraine Newman) — has drawn the line. The house that was the home of Farmer Jim is where the two misfits now live. But now it is ramshackle and in need of repair. It is the worst place in Grandview.

Porky Pig and Daffy Duck are now afraid the Mrs. Gretch will find the house unlivable. Especially since the roof was caved in by the Alien goo. Without any money, these two intrepid nut jobs decide they need to find a real job. Many places where they go to work also fire them the same day. They are getting nervous.

At a local diner, they decide that their luck will never turn good. Until their luck turns, after they meet a friendly worker from the local gum factory. Petunia Pig (voiced by Candi Milo) is a professional Gum Taste Tester. She is also the prettiest pig that Porky has ever met.

She arranges for both Daffy and Porky to get jobs at the gum factory. They will earn money to save the house. Plus Porky is really glad that he will be near his new love — Petunia Pig. Daffy Duck is OK with that. But he gets wind of a major conspiracy at the factory. Is there any other kind of conspiracy?

Daffy spots the Scientist at the factory, and he is acting strange. He has a briefcase full of the Alien goo, and he puts it into the gum process machine. All of the new gum being made will have become infected with the goo. And the one behind all of this is the Evil Alien (voiced by Peter MacNicol).

Anyone who chews this gum will become a zombie who only listens to the commands of the Evil Alien. Daffy goes straight to the City Square. He tries to tell everyone about the Evil Alien conspiracy, including Mrs. Gretch and the Grandview Mayor (voiced by Wayne Knight). However, Daffy has a reputation of being a weird conspiracy nut.

Soon, the entire city is under the spell of the Evil Alien. It is all up to Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, with some help from their new friend Petunia Pig. The gum with the Alien goo has taken over the city. It is just about to take over the country, and quickly the whole planet.

Porky Pig is usually very shy and unassuming. But when he is joined by Petunia, he finds an inner strength. Petunia uses all of her science background to find a way to fight off the Alien goo gum. Daffy Duck is a Looney loser most time, but now he finds that the power to break things can come in handy.

These unlikely heroes get an assist from the Scientist, once he is out of the spell of the Evil Alien. What exactly does this creepy creature from another world want with the Earth? And even if they can save all the people on the Earth — there is still the asteroid that is heading for a major collision. Oh, what can they do?

“The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” is a delightful romp into the weird and wacky world of Looney Tunes. The two major stars are the original old-school crazy jokers from the nostalgic days of yore. They are given a bare-bones story line, and that is so they can concentrate on the WB-style humor.

The movie’s background is even crazier than the story line. This was meant to be created as a streaming movie on Max. The Corporate Honchos at the WB went into a merger, and afterwards many projects were shelved.

This is one of the projects went into cold storage. But then an outside group, Ketchup Entertainment, bought the rights. They went and got this movie set up for a theatrical release. The world is now a better place because of this!

Pete Browngardt, the Director, has done a great job to get a ‘odd couple buddy story’ put together for Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. He worked with a few other writers, actually TEN other writers, to make a loosely fit story. This movie concentrates on friendship, bravery, and the power of humor to make people laugh.

“The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” is just a throw-back to the controlled insanity of a classic Looney Tunes cartoon. Let’s hope that —  “Th-Th-That’s not All, Folks”.

When the lights go dark and movie begins, you can participate in a special kind of magic. You can be entertained, or enlightened. But you are never bored. Or at least, let's hope not.
