I’ve never read a Colleen Hoover book to give you a comparison of the adaptation, but from the sounds of joy and the occasional holler going on last night during certain moments of the film, I think I’m missing out.
Those members of the audience were in on something I wasn’t privy to. Seems it was my loss. They were totally dug in with approval, and their endorsement was somewhat charming.
The film stars Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers as Kenna and Ledger. The actors were spot-on accurate with their interpretation of what the story was selling and how to give their audience what they were there to see. The film also starred Monika Myers, a Canadian actress and model who has Down syndrome. Her character was extremely passionate, and Myers, quite good at her craft, made the audience laugh many times over, especially with callbacks of making Ledger feel uncomfortable. That was her goal on the daily and you’ll appreciate her effort.
The movie is a story filled with romance, but it’s centered around Kenna, newly released from prison. Kenna was with and in love with Scotty (Rudy Pankow) until his untimely death in an accident. You get to know Scotty through plenty of flashbacks. Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford play his parents. They have, since Kenna was in prison, custody of her daughter, Diem. Now, she desperately wants to see and get to know the person she and Scotty created together, but that’s not something they are interested in. They’ve raised her and have been with her since day one. They’ve done a beautiful job, with help from their son’s friend, Ledger. Not wanting to give her to anyone, no matter the relation, they allow Ledger to get close. Graham, whom you see very little of, plays unfair very well. You’ll ache for poor Kenna having to deal with her.
Kenna and Ledger didn’t get to know one another before Ledger went to play in the NFL, but she knew of him. Now, he is helping Scotty’s parents raise her daughter, a surrogate father of sorts. She gets close to him for that reason, but also because he cares for her child and eventually cares to see her do well.
The book was published in 2022, and “Reminders of Him” has sold more than 6 million copies in the United States. The film does get a little hot and steamy, but it manages to stay lovable and sweet at the same time. Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers are believable and really good together in their scenes. If you like the romantic films, especially if you’ve enjoyed previous Colleen Hoover films, see this at the theater. From the response in my screening, the audience was totally dug in, so I’d see it at the theater if I were you. It’ll keep you engaged.
