“Gold Dust” is an independent gem of a movie. It is not Fool’s Gold by a long shot. It is quirky and wacky release for DVD and Video-on-Demand, but I think it should be in Great Demand. It concerns a pair of oddball treasure hunters roaming throughout the Southwest desert looking for treasure, but finding mostly nothing but trouble. If you took “No Country for Old Men” and crossed it with crazy comedy — like ‘The Odd Couple’, you might get close to this movie. It might not have a huge budget or have major studio backing, but is a worth while nugget to find in these forlorn times.
Two adventure-seeking treasure hunters live isolated out in a desert shack. They have some quirky ideas about finding an ancient sailing vessel from ages ago – lost in the mists of legend. There can be gold and gems on that ancient ship, and they go seek it out. Moses (David Wysocki) and Fink (David Wall) are on the trail of something Big. But they stumble onto something Bad! There is a empty para-glider, and a jeep with a dead guy that looks like Santa. And Santa just left these boys almost $350,000 bucks in a duffle bag. It’s not like it was Drug Money or anything – right?
Fink and Moses find out they are on the bad side of a Drug Cartel big boss named El Guapo (Garrett Marchbank). He has sent his number one henchman out to find the money, a guy called the ‘Dancing Killer’ (Derek Severson). This guy loves Opera as much as he likes to inflict pain. The para-glider was operated by a small child named Maggie (Maggie Hough). She tells them that El Guapo has lot of kidnapped kids in Mexico, and they all smuggle the drugs into the US of A. Moses sees that he has a new purpose in life, he wants to free all these kids from Bondage. Fink just wants to take the money and run…
With some other kidnapped children who had escaped, Maggie gets away. Moses gets taken by the ‘Dancing Killer’, along with about half a dozen other people that the Killer met along the way. For a while, only Fink is out and free in the world. He has his sights set on impressing his old high school girlfriend, now that he has money. But that does not turn out like he expected. Fink finds his old girlfriend, but he also finds a Drug Cartel big boss… So Fink goes back out into the desert to find his only best friend, Moses. But his best friend, Maggie, and a few other people are at risk of being murdered by the ‘Dancing Killer’. If Fink could only find a way to defeat the all powerful ‘Killer’. Perhaps, he can use the ultimate power – the power of Italian Opera!
“Gold Dust” is full of, what they call in the movie, Pixie Dust. It is a magical substance that can rarely be found in many movies now. It is a wry look at a bunch of serious topics, but it has loads of fun with everything. It does not need to be laugh-out-loud funny – it is just a well-defined group of odd characters — all put into the weirdest situations. It turns out for audience that the movie has a good cast and crew that deliver on this premise. They should appreciate the quirky way that David Wall (Fink) and David Wysocki (Moses) behave like the ‘Odd Couple’ of treasure hunters. They banter and bicker like an old married couple.
But the power of this movie, and what drives it along is the combination of Fink and Moses, and how they first run from – then start to fight with — the ‘Dancing Killer’ (Derek Severson) and his top boss, El Guapo (Garrett Marchbank). Marchbank has a wonderful time, mostley being a face on the phone – hamming it up to an extreme amount. All the time, having the time of his life! Severson is the polar opposite, never really talking, just being large and imposing – while listing to loud Opera arias on his souped-up SUV. He captures his victims and is ready to bring down his deadly force – as soon as this next Opera movement is done…
