Spider-Man Brand New Day Movie Review

This is going to be difficult to write without telling you things you don’t want to know going in. Important to inform you of, I liked the use of all the supporting characters, of which there are several and they’re all crucial to the storyline. ​

We know from “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” that Peter Parker (Holland) is almost completely on his own. In case you’re unaware, the world has forgotten him, a decision he made so get through the trouble he couldn’t seem to escape anymore. Those who he had to leave behind were MJ (Zendaya) and his bestie Ned (Batalon), one of Parkers’ most important person to lean on. The relationships with whom he can still count on are richer and enhanced here. This adds loving moments, but also deep sadness as you see Parker long for the good old days. The film is more personal and gets into the nitty gritty of what his isolated life has become. He’s older and on his own. Holland plays Parker well.

For something to do, he plays detective, helping to stop crime when he sees it happening. He is welcome to do this by an actual detective named Jeanne De Wolfe, played by Liza Colón‑Zayas. This brings along with it a lot of incredible choregraphed scenes by Spiderman at his best. The detective is grateful for help but sometimes annoyed by him. He’s annoyed with himself, to be honest. Why? Because what he’s going through is a metamorphosis in his arachnid DNA. Is he Peter Parker or is he Spider-Man. He may have to give up one or the other. This is most likely because of his age. He begins to mutate. Look at a spider, they have blacked-out eyes, he gets them for short periods of time. His senses are heightened and he needs to learn how to control all the information coming in at once. He also finds himself dangling from cocoons, something to see I assure you, and he has natural, organic web-shooters now. No more having to make them. Is there a way to stop this change to his DNA? That seems to be the driving force behind this movie.

Frank Castle is incredibly important for Parker. He helps the young man grow and understand that sometimes you need to exercise power, rather than hold back punishment with empathy. The scenes they are in together are tremendous. The characters, no matter the situation, go together like hand and glove.

My only real issue? There were too many drawn-out fight sequences. Cut those down and you have a more streamlined film that fits near the top of them all. It is visually appealing, but it didn’t need to be over two hours long… and you will feel that time. However, the web slinging is worth admission. When there’s literally an instant with a Spidey Uber service thrown in, I knew I had to tell you to see this on the big screen. For what I just mentioned and for Hulk (Ruffalo) alone, this and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” are by far the best, I can’t pick which is better, so we’ll call it a tie. “Spider-Man Brand New Day” is electrifying… especially the new characters that are introduced. One is incredibly special. Don’t try and find out who I’m talking about!

Don’t leave right away as the Spidey Tracker is seen again.
