Sisu: Road to Revenge Movie Review

Once again, we have a Sisu story that bears a man refusing to die… and a killer score! You’re immediately on the side of this mad killer, but the music makes it so much better.

If you liked the first one, you’ll love this one, too. Don’t compare the two; they’re different in a few ways, but this is a must-see if you liked “Sisu.” Of course, it almost goes without saying that you loved the first movie if, from the moment you saw the trailer, you couldn’t wait for “Sisu: Road to Revenge” to be released. You knew you had to see it, didn’t you? The gratuitous bloodbath that you got from “Sisu” was an absolute blast. Maybe because this man was terrifying, probably because he was killing angry, mean Russian soldiers and Nazi’s. Korpi was called “The Immortal.” The name stuck, and they fear him still. By the way, you don’t need to watch the first film before watching this one. However, I suggest you do just for the enjoyment.

There’s more this time around, asked of actor Jorma Tommila, who again plays our gold prospector, Korpi. It’s two years later, and he’s decided it’s time to go back home. He walks into his house, his dog runs in, and, with tears for the past, he tears the house down piece by piece and puts everything he can into a giant truck. His home has always been in Finland, and it will be again. Due to Russian occupation, the border has moved, and so shall he.

Korpi is still good at what he does, as Stephen Lang’s Igor Draganov (a Soviet Red Army officer responsible for killing Korpi’s family and creating the monster Korpi has become) warns. You’ll find Korpis’ expertise on that very subject entertaining. Writer/Director Jalmari Helander made sure not to disappoint his audience and to carry over certain elements from the first into this. Igor warns everyone about the old “crafty motherf*cker,” but the soldiers he warns won’t listen. Too bad for them. A new group of soldiers comes through… will they take heed?

Surprisingly, this was nearly as good as the first. Since we knew what to expect, it might not seem as good, but if you like your action less blood-soaked and with bigger explosions, you just may prefer this one. The comedy works really well here, as it did in the first. It’s, sweet perfection. You’ll appreciate the work put into pleasing your eyes. Road to Revenge is a spectacular way to present a Frankenstein-type tale, with Igor meeting his creation, Korpi, who dislikes him very much and would like to rid the world of his beating heart. In a fork, and other kitchen items fight, you laugh. In another fight with Igor, filled with rage, you’ll find contentment in knowing Korpi finally gets vengeance. See it for that, or just to watch these two actors, Jorma Tommila and Stephen Lang, show off their stuff.
