Kiss of the Spider Woman Movie Review

This movie was much more than I was expecting. Bill Condon brought out the best in these actors; the movie was visually impressive, and everyone involved handled their tasks with ease and skill.

The characters were deep and rich. Tonatiuh plays Luis Molina, who is imprisoned for being himself, a gay man. Surviving life in the slammer surrounded by his posters and dreaming of his favorite movies. His performance is beyond superb. Jennifer Lopez dazzles with dance numbers that sparkle, lending to the story effortlessly. The two have too much talent for one film. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen, afraid I’d miss something beautiful.

Our story takes place in 1983 Argentina. The government imprisons political activists, anyone who speaks out against the regime. Valentin (Diego Luna) is a member of the resistance who has information they strongly covet. Valentin is thrown into a cell with Molina. It is put upon Molina to get information from Valentin. If he does, he’ll receive an early parole and see his mother again, so he does what he can to get as close as possible to Valentin. Valentin doesn’t want to get to know his roommate, so he initially distances himself. But it isn’t easy to stay away from Molina. His charisma, charm, and nature are not simple features to look beyond, and his allure isn’t something you can easily avoid.

In 1985, William Hurt and Raul Julia performed in “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” the psychological drama on which it is based. No dancing and singing in that one. They’re both based on the 1976 novel by Argentine author Manuel Puig. They are also based on Manuel Puig’s book. Following the success of the 1985 film, William Hurt won the coveted Oscar for his role, which Tonatiuh was cast in. Chances are good for Tonatiuh and even Lopez to follow in Hurt’s footsteps. From this, you receive romance and fantasy, the latter of which brings Lopez into the fold.

To pass the time, Molina tells Valentin about his favorite film, Kiss of the Spider Woman, in such great detail that Valentin can see it play out in his mind. We can see it play out, as well. Lopez plays actress Ingrid Luna and her character Aurora… the Spider Woman. Molina loves Ingrid and fits the narrative perfectly.  She is everything Molina wants to be and more. For this role, Lopez deserves every bit of credit she’ll receive. She shines, thrills, and excites with every note and every move.

Regarding Tonatiuh on screen as the story he tells unfolds… you won’t be able to look away. Do not miss seeing this on the big screen.
