Look Both Ways

IN A NUTSHELL:

On the eve of her college graduation, Natalie’s life diverges into parallel realities: one in which she becomes pregnant and remains in her hometown to raise her child, and another in which she movies to LA with her best friend to pursue her dream career.

The movie was directed by Wanuri Kahiu and written by April Prosser.  I really enjoyed it.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Lili Reinhart stars as Natalie.  She does an excellent job and provides subtle differences to help you keep track of which version she’s playing.
  • Other cast members include Danny Ramirez, Aisha Dee, and David Corenswet.  They all give solid performances.
  • The movie’s original title was “Plus/Minus”.
  • The movie goes back and forth between the two different versions of Natalie’s life, but it’s fairly easy to keep track of which girl is which due to hairstyles and clothing.
  • With the popularity of the metaverse in recent movies, this story focuses only just two possibilities of someone’s life.
  • The sarcastic humor is amusing.
  • I loved the ambiguous ending and reassuring message.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Sadly, I think a lot of girls treat sex casually and end up getting knocked up, not realizing how dramatically their life will change.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Talk of pregnancy and birth
  • We see a girl wearing just her bra.
  • Some profanity

THEMES:

  • Love
  • Friendship
  • Life choices
  • Consequences
  • Parenting
  • Sacrifices
